Meet the Taipei-born, Los Angeles-based jazz guitarist and vocalist known for her soulful tone
Introducing Ponpon, the latest addition to the Gibson Artist Spotlight program, dedicated to showcasing and supporting exceptional emerging talent. Ponpon is a jazz guitarist and vocalist from Taipei, now based in Los Angeles, who blends traditional jazz with scat singing, whistling, and storytelling.
Inspired by legends such as George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Chet Baker, Ponpon has performed internationally and appeared on ABC World News Now, sharing her soulful and captivating sound with audiences worldwide. We recently caught up with Ponpon to find out more about her background, influences, favourite guitars and upcoming projects. Read on for the full interview.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
“Hi, I'm Ponpon from Taipei. I'm a jazz singer and guitarist, currently based in Los Angeles. I've been singing since I was 12, and now, at 24, I'm pursuing my career in jazz.”
What got you into jazz music?
“During the pandemic in 2021, I was stuck at home and spent a lot of time online exploring music beyond Mandopop. That's when I came across a live performance by my hero, George Benson. Seeing him sing and play guitar at the same time completely blew my mind. I immediately looked him up, discovered jazz, and fell in love with the music. Soon after, my dad bought me my first electric guitar, found me a teacher, and I even started learning English through jazz.”
We understand you’ve met George in person. What's the best advice you received from him?
“I met George about a year ago in Phoenix. I thanked him for changing my life, and he told me, ‘Just remember one thing. You can love my music and I appreciate that, but you got to find your own sound. So you can love me, but don't copy me.’ That's one of the most valuable pieces of advice I've ever received.”
What has been your most memorable gig so far?
“After moving to Los Angeles to study music, I've been performing around town. Last year, I rearranged the theme for ABC World News Now. It was only a 90-second video, but it reached a huge audience and brought messages from people all over the world. That was a turning point for me.”
Tell us about your favorite Gibson guitars—the ES-175 and ES-339. Why do you love semi-hollow guitars?
“I’ve been playing Gibson guitars for about three years, and I love them. Both the hollow and semi-hollow models have the warm, rich tone that fits my style perfectly. The ES-175 is a true jazz classic played by legends like George Benson, Jim Hall, and Jimmy Raney. I felt an instant connection the first time I played it. The ES-339 is lighter and more compact, making it perfect for standing gigs while still delivering that warm semi-hollow sound. I love them both for different reasons.”
Do you have any advice for young musicians trying to make a name for themselves?
“Stay true to yourself and don't be afraid to explore. Switching from Mandopop to jazz completely changed my life. If you love what you do and enjoy the journey, that's what matters most. No matter your age, language, or skill level, trust yourself and keep growing.”
What are your upcoming music plans?
“I recently finished recording my debut album and completed my master's degree. The album will be released early next year, and I can't wait to share it with everyone and take it on tour.
