Gibson celebrates 100 years of flat-top acoustic guitars with 12-Fret Century Collection models

Gibson celebrates 100 years of flat-top acoustic guitars with 12-Fret Century Collection models

Continuing its celebration of 100 Years of Flat-Tops, Gibson has launched three new models with improved comfort and a responsive voice perfect for fingerstyle players

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Gibson flat-top acoustic guitars, three new 12-fret models have been launched as part of the Century Collection. The J-45™ Century 12-Fret, L-00 Century 12-Fret, and J-185 Century 12-Fret, are available in Vintage Amber, Vintage Sunburst, and Ebony nitrocellulose lacquer finishes and as left-handed versions, with each featuring a 12-fret neck-to-body joint.

Mat Koehler, Gibson Vice President of Product, commented: “Gibson acoustics have clearly shaped music history. And they’ve influenced how we at Gibson think today, too. The all-new Century Collection is made using the same proportions and principles that make the originals some of the most collectible vintage acoustics: deeper-set 12-fret necks for easy reach, perfect bridge placement in the heart of the soundboard, featherweight construction and bracing, a thin satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and the unique Gibson scale length that gives our guitars soul.”

The placement of the neck joint at the 12th fret instead of the more common 14-fret configuration shortens the neck and moves the bridge plate farther from the waist and closer to the body’s widest point, enhancing top movement and improving playing comfort. It also means that tonally, these guitar have a warm, lively, and responsive voice that suits fingerstyle players and those with a lighter, nuanced touch. Let’s explore each model.

Gibson J-45 Century 12-Fret

J-45 Century 12-Fret

First released in 1942, the “Workhorse” acoustic remains the best‑selling Gibson acoustic guitar of all time. The J-45 Century 12-Fret provides a fresh take on this classic design, while retaining its core character. Although Gibson has built 12‑fret J-45 variations before, they’ve traditionally appeared only as artist collaborations or in limited Gibson Custom runs.

This new model pairs a mahogany body with a Sitka spruce top, accented by single‑ply cream binding tracing the top and back. A mahogany neck features a fast SlimTaper™ 12-Fret profile and is joined to the body at the 12th fret with a compound dovetail joint secured with hot hide glue, consistent with traditional Gibson acoustic builds.

A rosewood fretboard carries 19 frets and simple mother‑of‑pearl dot inlays. Up top, the headstock is fitted with open‑back Golden Age strap tuners with cream buttons and dressed up with an early 1900s‑style Gibson script logo decal. A sloped rectangle closed‑slot rosewood bridge, echoing those found on the earliest J-45 models, adds another vintage‑inspired touch. It also includes a bone nut and saddle, TUSQ® bridge pins, a classic Gibson L‑00‑style pickguard, and a hand‑sprayed satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

Gibson L-00 Century 12-Fret

L-00 Century 12-Fret

First introduced in the early 1930s, the Gibson L‑00 quickly became one of the most recognized small‑body acoustics in the Gibson lineup. The L‑Series has long been associated with parlor‑style playing, due to its popularity in living rooms and home music spaces. Again, Gibson has built 12‑fret L‑00 models before, but they have historically appeared only on the earliest pre‑war flat‑tops or in limited‑production runs.

The L‑00 Century 12‑Fret also offers a mahogany body with a Sitka spruce top and single‑ply cream binding on both the top and back. It offers the same neck build, a rosewood fingerboard with 19 frets, and the same headstock details as the J-45 model. Its finishing touches include the sloped‑rectangle closed‑slot rosewood bridge, a bone nut and saddle, TUSQ® bridge pins, plus a classic L‑00‑style pickguard.

Gibson J-185 Century 12-Fret

J-185 Century 12-Fret

While the Gibson J-185 may not have achieved the same universal name recognition as models like the J‑45, SJ‑200, and Hummingbird, it still earned a reputation as one of best-sounding acoustic guitars Gibson has ever made. Originally released in 1951, the J‑185’s body outline drew inspiration from the celebrated 1920s L‑5 models, sharing much of their silhouette and proportions.

Because any J‑185 variant is relatively uncommon, let alone 12-fret versions, this new J-185 Century 12-Fret model gives a much wider audience the chance to experience the tonal character that only a 12‑fret jumbo can offer. It shares many of the same design features as its other Century 12-Fret Collection siblings, including its woods, cream binding, and of course the SlimTaper™ 12-Fret profile. It’s also fitted with a Gibson oval teardrop pickguard and finished with a hand-applied satin nitrocellulose lacquer.

Gibson Century Collection case

Every guitar in the Century 12-Fret Collection comes packed in a custom hardshell case that pays homage to the early days of Gibson flat-tops, featuring a 1930s-style “Aeroplane Cloth” tweed exterior, a stenciled Gibson script logo, and bold red Art Deco stripes. Open the lid, and you’re met with a historic purple felt interior, another luxurious nod to vintage Gibson cases that once cradled the iconic brand’s earliest masterpieces. Lightweight yet unmistakably premium and protective, these unique hardshell cases complete the Century Collection experience with a sense of authenticity, style, and collectible desirability.

Also celebrating this special 100-year milestone of Gibson flat-top acoustics is the expansion of the Original Collection, which launched earlier this year. Featuring the J-160E Original, SJ-200 60s Original, and LG-2 50s Original, these reimagined classics have returned to the Gibson lineup, preserving original vintage character and introducing modern touch-ups.
