Meet the rising alternative artist building cinematic worlds of angst, identity, and rebellion through their emotionally charged blend of alt, electronic, and pop
Los Angeles-based Black Polish (aka Jayden “Jay” Binnix) is the latest addition to the Gibson Artist Spotlight program, dedicated to showcasing and supporting exceptional emerging talent on the global stage. On “a mission to make listeners feel less alone,” Black Polish is a bold, resonant voice in modern alternative music. We recently caught up with them to find out more.
How would you describe your music?
“My music is traumatized religious swamp music made for gays stuck at home with 7+ hours of screen time who live(d) in the South just like me. The pretty sounds make it so cinematic that it serves as an escape from reality, while the groovy guitar melodies makes you bounce around your bedroom when no-one’s watching. The best part is, you get to scream along with me.”
What’s your favorite piece of gear?
“I love my silver Kramer and my acoustic Hummingbird. Because these guitars highlight the high-ends of the chords while remaining big, it gives my indie/rock music a nice country twang that reminds me of the South I grew up in.”
What has been the highlight of your musical career so far?
“The highlight of my musical career has to be building my online presence on social media and deeply connecting with my disciples. Each comment that says my music found them at the perfect time and is saving them fills me with so much joy. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
What would be your dream artist or producer collaboration?
“Clams Casino and Ethel Cain have my heart. Both production styles are exactly what I love because there’s not a moment I’m not fully sunken into the song. Also come on. It’s Ethel Cain.”
What does being part of the Gibson Artist Spotlight program mean to you?
”The Gibson crew is some of the nicest, most welcoming group of people I have ever met. It’s incredible to be supported by a team that fully understands my vision. These aren’t just people in the music industry. They too are creatives. I viewed a showcase of their top favorite custom pieces and I was blown away. The amount of care and detail they put into an artistic vision is exactly why I love partnering with them.”
What's next on the horizon for you?
“The next chapter is inspired by the fans and my famous childhood schooling experiences.”
