A one-of-a-kind Art Deco-inspired SJ-200
Since its debut in 1937, the Gibson SJ-200 has earned a place among the most iconic acoustic guitars ever created. Reverently known as the “King of the Flat-Tops” for its expansive body, commanding voice, unmistakable visual presence, and enduring appeal across generations of rock, pop, folk, and country musicians, the SJ-200 Art Deco Brazilian Rosewood from Gibson Custom reimagines this legendary model as a singular work of functional art. Combining exceptional tonewoods, intricate craftsmanship, and striking Art Deco-inspired appointments, it elevates an acoustic classic to an extraordinary new level.
This one-of-one SJ-200 Art Deco Brazilian Rosewood features a jumbo body highlighted by a three-piece back crafted from Brazilian rosewood and highly figured koa. A distinctive Art Deco inlay embellishes the center section of the back, creating a dramatic focal point. Brazilian rosewood is also used for the sides, showcasing the rare wood’s celebrated beauty and renowned tonal characteristics. Multi-ply abalone and cream binding adorn the back and lower body, while the AAA Sitka spruce top is supported by Gibson Custom’s scalloped X-bracing and trimmed with matching multi-ply abalone and cream binding along the top and upper sides.
The 25.5" scale two-piece maple neck incorporates a walnut center stringer and is shaped to a substantial yet comfortable Round profile. Joined to the body at the 14th fret via a compound dovetail joint assembled with hot hide glue, the neck contributes to outstanding resonance and tonal transfer. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features 20 standard frets and an elaborate Art Deco-inspired inlay pattern crafted from abalone and mother of pearl. Extending through the fret positions, the design creates a truly distinctive visual statement and represents a first-of-its-kind feature on a Gibson acoustic guitar.
The Art Deco influence continues onto the multi-ply bound headstock, which features a rare vintage SJ-100-style stair-step design. A three-dimensional Art Deco-inspired mother-of-pearl and abalone inlay complements a script Gibson logo rendered in mother of pearl. The addition of binding to the stair-step headstock marks another unique detail, making this the first Gibson stair-step headstock to receive such treatment. An Art Deco-themed mother-of-pearl truss rod cover completes the design. Premium nickel-plated Grover® Imperial™ tuning machines and a bone nut provide dependable tuning stability and smooth operation.
Additional Art Deco-inspired details can be found throughout the body. The Brazilian rosewood bridge is accented with dual three-dimensional mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays that reinforce the instrument’s distinctive visual theme. A bone saddle and bone bridge pins with abalone dot inlays further enhance both appearance and performance. The SJ-100-style pickguard is bordered with abalone and embellished with a matching mother-of-pearl and abalone Art Deco inlay, tying the design together from headstock to bridge.
Finished in an elegant vintage-inspired Argentine Grey gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, the SJ-200 Art Deco Brazilian Rosewood stands as a truly unique expression of Gibson Custom craftsmanship. Meticulously built by the skilled luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop in Bozeman, Montana, this one-of-a-kind instrument blends extraordinary artistry with the renowned voice and presence of the SJ-200. It ships in a custom hardshell case and includes a certificate of authenticity.
