Feature-Packed 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue
This Gibson Custom Select 1959 Les Paul™ Standard Reissue features a few rarely seen options that make this guitar a special instrument. Gibson Custom Select offers instruments with unique specifications, including exotic tonewoods, customized finishes, and unique electronics. These guitars are designed by Gibson’s experts and are made in small batches at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee. These guitars are based on existing models but have unique specifications that set them apart from the core offering available worldwide. Featuring a AAA quilt maple top with f-holes carved out over a chambered mahogany body, this guitar adds a classy aesthetic to an iconic model.
The Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue is the flagship model produced by the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee. In Gibson’s history, 1959 was the year that it all came together for the Les Paul Standard. Desirable features included a curly maple top with a Cherry Sunburst finish, glued to a solid, 1-piece mahogany body loaded with early Patent Applied For humbucker™ pickups. The neck profile had been refined from a Chunky 1950s D-shape to a Medium C profile, making the 1959 Les Paul Standard such a desirable instrument. The finish faded with exposure to ultraviolet light, making each guitar a unique shade of Cherry Sunburst, giving each guitar its persona. The Gibson Custom Shop uses laser-scanning technology to recreate these legendary guitars at a fraction of the price tag of an original example.
Modifications on this Gibson Custom Select 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue include a AAA quilt maple top with f-holes, a chambered mahogany body, and a custom Antiquity Burst finish. The standard AAA flame maple top on the core model is upgraded to a AAA quilt maple top, which is much harder to source than flame maple. To showcase the chambered body, a book-matched AAA quilt maple top features f-holes, similar to those on an ES-335™ model. While this Gibson Custom Select 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue features a single-piece chambered mahogany body, the core offering features a non-weight-relieved mahogany body as the standard specification. The Antiquity Burst finish showcases the AAA quilt maple while being a unique shade of Cherry Sunburst. The finishing process for Antiquity Burst includes two coats of antique lacquer, which mellow the bright tones of the first-applied finish. Despite having two coats of antique lacquer, this guitar is finished in gloss, which is an unusual combination. Two coats of antique lacquer are typically found on guitars aged in the Murphy Lab, not on a guitar with a gloss exterior. A Faded Cherry aniline dye back and neck pair nicely with the Antiquity Burst finish featured on the top of the guitar.
The modifications on this Gibson Custom Select 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue are classy takes on the Gibson Custom flagship model. This guitar features modifications rarely seen on a historic reissue, yet it brings a sense of freshness to such a beloved model. Add two coats of antique lacquer to the gloss exterior, and this guitar is a unique beast based on the legendary 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a reissue hardshell case.
