KO KO MO joins the Gibson Artist Spotlight program

KO KO MO

“Pure rock ’n’ roll energy, with a mix of other influences”

Now in its second year, the Gibson Artist Spotlight program showcases an evolving roster of musical talent across Gibson channels globally. Following recent additions Yasser Tejeda and PAIO, the latest artist to join the Gibson Artist Spotlight ranks is KO KO MO, a duo from Nantes, France. KO KO MO have energized tens of thousands of people at prestigious festivals and have earned the praise of rock legends like Jack White, Rival Sons, and Royal Republic. Their latest album, Striped, is now available. We caught up with KO KO MO frontman and guitarist Warren Mutton to find out more.

How would you describe your music?

“It’s pure rock ’n’ roll energy, with a mix of other influences. On the last album, I tried to bring in some folk, pop, and even a bit of electro. KO KO MO has always been a playground for two guys with opposite approaches—and that’s what makes it exciting. K20 (the drummer) has his own way of playing, and we never tell each other how to play the songs. We just do what we love, without overthinking. If it feels good to us—and to the crowd—that’s all that matters.”

What is your favourite piece of Gibson gear?

“My favourite Gibson is an SG Custom inspired by the one Angus Young played at the legendary Paris show in 1979. It started as an Ebony Custom, but I modified it with a large white pickguard, added a Vibrola, changed the knobs, and replaced the pickups with Custombuckers. So it’s kind of a mix between a Standard and a Custom. I bought it a few years ago and I just love how it feels—light and solid at the same time. Everything about it is comfortable: the neck, the ebony fretboard, the big, open tone… it’s perfect for touring. I also own a 1967 SG Standard that’s unbeatable, but I’m too afraid to take it on the road. That one stays home or goes to the studio.”

What has been the highlight of your musical career so far?

“I don’t really want to pick one particular highlight—the whole journey is the highlight for me. We’ve had the chance to live our passion on the road for 12 years now. Of course, we’ve played incredible venues and festivals, but I don’t want to say that some moments are better than others. It’s all part of the same adventure.”

What would be your dream artist or producer collaboration, and why?

“We were lucky to collaborate with one of my favourite guitarists and songwriters of today—Pablo van de Poel from DeWolff. I love those guys so much! The craziest dream ever would be a jam session with Paul McCartney… produced by Jack White. Hahaha.”

What does being part of the Gibson Artist Spotlight program mean to you?

“When I started playing guitar at nine, I was listening to legends like B.B. King, Paul Kossoff, and Clapton with the Bluesbreakers. My dream back then was to own a Gibson one day—and I was already trying to copy that kind of tone. Now I have four Gibsons, and I feel so honored to represent the brand in my country. It’s honestly crazy for me. Thank you, Gibson, for your trust.”

What’s next on the horizon for you?

“The main project right now is our biggest show so far—in February, at our first arena in Paris. We have to reinvent a lot of things for it. It’s definitely not about doing the same show in a bigger venue—it’s a completely new show, with many surprises, guests, and special moments. It’s a lot of work… but just for one magical night.”
