What’s the deal with Patent Applied For humbuckers and why are they so revered?
There’s no pickup more synonymous with the sound of rock music—nor more imitated—than the Patent Applied For humbucker. Invented in 1955 by Gibson engineer Seth Lover to eliminate—or buck—the hum of single-coil pickups, Patent Applied For humbuckers officially debuted on Gibson guitars in late 1956, and soon featured the “Patent Applied For” decals on the base plate that gave them their nickname.
Legendary rock and blues guitarists such as Peter Green, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Michael Bloomfield, and many others made some of the most groundbreaking recordings of the 1960s and 1970s with Gibson Les Paul™ Standard electric guitars fitted with Patent Applied For pickups. The cult surrounding those iconic players and their guitars is considerable—read our love-letter to the Gibson Les Paul to find out more.
