1958 Gibson Les Paul Special, Serial Number 8 5544, with GA-20T Amplifier
Representing the final year of the single-cutaway Les Paul™ Special, this exceptionally clean 1958 example is paired with its longtime companion, a 1958 Gibson GA-20 amplifier. According to prior ownership history, the guitar and amplifier remained together throughout their lives in Ohio before eventually passing to friends of the longtime owner. Carefully stored and only minimally played for decades, both survive today in excellent condition and offer an authentic, late-1950s Gibson playing experience.
Finished in TV Yellow, the Les Paul Special shows only light signs of use throughout. Tight, even lacquer checking is present across the instrument, accompanied by a handful of small nicks, dings, and handling marks concentrated primarily along the body and headstock edges. The most notable wear is a small area of finish wear measuring approximately 3/4" along the back edge of the body near the output jack. A few small, blue marks are present along the bass-side lower bout edge and are among the only immediately noticeable blemishes on an otherwise very clean guitar. The original nickel hardware remains exceptionally clean with only minimal tarnishing present, while the Les Paul Special silkscreen remains clean and well preserved.
Consistent with many 1958 Les Paul Specials, this guitar features a black rubber selector-switch bumper more commonly associated with Gibson archtop electrics of the period rather than the plastic switch washer or "poker chip" found on most Les Paul models. The original Kluson® Deluxe tuners retain their original buttons, which remain in excellent condition, although the G-string tuner shaft exhibits a very slight bend that does not affect functionality. A vintage, era-correct truss rod cover has been fitted and presents appropriately with the instrument. The original Wraparound tailpiece, studs, and hardware are all exceptionally clean.
The Medium C mahogany neck is comfortable in hand, and the original small, vintage frets remain in good condition. The guitar plays cleanly up and down the fretboard with excellent action and a smooth, easy feel. Weighing 7.87 pounds, it strikes a nice balance between substance and comfort.
The electronics remain fully original throughout with clean, untouched solder joints. The neck P-90 measures 7.96k ohms while the bridge pickup measures 8.03k ohms. Original Centralab® potentiometers, Sprague Bumblebee capacitors, and Switchcraft® components remain in place. Together, the pickups form a well-matched pair. The neck pickup delivers a warm, mellow voice with plenty of low-end response, while the bridge pickup remains clear, articulate, and highly controllable with excellent definition. The result is a versatile and responsive guitar equally at home with jazz, blues, rock and roll, and everything in between.
Included as part of this original pairing is a 1958 Gibson GA-20 amplifier. The two-tone black and tweed covering configuration found on this example was utilized primarily during 1958 and is not commonly encountered on early or later GA-20 amplifiers. Recently serviced by Nashville Amplifier Service, the amp is performing as intended and is ready for regular use. The original Jensen® speaker was replaced many years ago with a Weber® Classic Alnico speaker that suits the amplifier well and delivers excellent performance. Cosmetic condition remains very good overall, with minimal pitting on the control panel, light tarnishing on the handle hardware, and only minor wear to the covering. The Gibson badge remains present, although part of the "N" is missing and the "G" shows evidence of a previous repair.
The guitar is housed in a new Lifton® Historic Gator Skin Les Paul Jr. hardshell case inspired by the original faux-gator skin chipboard cases, but designed specifically to fit and protect slab-bodied Les Paul Junior and Les Paul Special models.
An exceptionally clean and highly original example of a final-year, single-cutaway Les Paul Special, offered together with its longtime 1958 Gibson GA-20 amplifier, this package represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic and well-preserved late-1950s Gibson rig.
