“Tuxedo-Spec” 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue
This Gibson Custom Select 1968 Les Paul™ Custom Reissue features a curated set of customizations that make it look like it’s dressed in a tuxedo. Gibson Custom Select makes guitars like this possible using the same system that is used to create Made to Measure designs. These guitars are based on existing models, with customizations to the base model, which can include finish, hardware, electronics, neck profiles, and more. Gibson Custom Select guitars are made in small batches by the skilled artisans at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, with details handpicked by Gibson’s experts. This customized set of features includes a custom White Sparkle finish with Ebony Sparkle headstock and heel joint stingers. Another custom feature on this guitar is the reversed body and headstock binding, which exposes a black layer of binding on the outside, which is very apparent on this guitar with its White Sparkle finish.
The 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue is a unique snapshot in Gibson’s history and catalog of guitars. The Les Paul Custom guitars made from 1954 to 1960 used a single piece of mahogany for the entire body, while the Les Paul Standard models from the same era used a mahogany body with a maple cap. In 1961, the single-cutaway Les Paul model family transitioned to the SG™ body shape. When the original single-cutaway design was reintroduced in 1968, the Les Paul Custom featured the mahogany body and maple cap construction from the 1950s Les Paul Standard models. The 1968 Les Paul Custom is the only vintage-style Les Paul reissue that features the body construction of the 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue with the stylings of the 1957 Les Paul Custom Reissue, giving the best of both worlds in this historic reissue.
Featuring all the styling of a Les Paul Custom, including an ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl block inlays, a multi-ply-bound body and headstock, and a split diamond inlay on the headstock, the guitar is dressed up with gold hardware, which fits the model’s deluxe aesthetics. The 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue features an Authentic 1968 neck profile, based on 3D scans of vintage examples. This neck profile is best described as a C-shape, slightly thinner than the Authentic 1959 neck profile and thicker than the Authentic 1961 neck profile.
Customized features on this guitar stick to aesthetics, staying true to the spirit of the 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue. First off is a White Sparkle finish applied to the entire instrument, including the top, back, sides, and neck. To contrast the stark white finish are Ebony Sparkle stingers on both the headstock and heel joint as well as reversed body and headstock binding. This reversed binding exposes a black outer layer of binding instead of a white one, which is only possible on Gibson Custom Select and Made to Measure designs. Both the White Sparkle and Ebony Sparkle finishes feature a light sparkle coverage, which is subtle but a sign of highly customized features.
This special 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue looks as if it is dressed up in a tuxedo, with customized features such as a White Sparkle finish, Ebony Sparkle headstock and heel joint stingers, and reversed body and headstock binding. Built in small batches at the Gibson Custom Shop, it combines the maple-capped mahogany construction that defined the late 1950s Les Paul Standard with the elegant appointments of a 50s-style Les Paul Custom. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a reissue hardshell case.
