Humbucker-loaded 1963 SG Junior Reissue in Ebony
This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG™ Junior Reissue comes loaded with an exposed humbucker™, bringing the sound of a humbucker-loaded guitar to the SG Junior platform. Gibson Custom Select guitars are based on current production models, but can be customized with unique features, including custom neck profiles, special finishes, and uncommon electronics. These guitars are designed by Gibson’s experts and are handcrafted in small batches at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee. While the 1963 SG Junior Reissue is not currently available as a production guitar, Gibson Custom Select enables this historic model to be offered directly from Gibson once again, but this time in small batches. Modifications from a typical 1963 SG Junior Reissue include a humbucker in the bridge position, an Ebony finish, and Murphy Lab Heavy Aging.
The Gibson SG Junior followed the previous two shapes of the Les Paul Junior that were originally made available between 1954 and 1960. Nearly 10 years after its initial release, the Junior platform retained its core attributes that have made the model attractive to players who want a bare-bones approach to their guitar. Fitted with a wraparound bridge and a Dogear P-90 pickup mounted directly to the body of the guitar, the SG Junior and Les Paul Junior have everything you need and nothing you don’t. These models are also defined by their stripped-down aesthetics, which include unbound fretboards with dot inlays and a silk-screened Gibson logo. All the features that made the Les Paul Junior so simple translated directly to the SG body shape, which continued the legacy of the model. The SG Junior had minor tweaks throughout the model’s original design, which started in 1961. The neck initially had a very slim profile and gradually became thicker until the middle of 1965, when the nut width changed to a narrower width.
While the guitar is not available as a standard production model, the Gibson Custom 1963 SG Junior Reissue is available through Made to Measure and Gibson Custom Select. Instead of the standard Dogear P-90 pickup typically fitted in the bridge position, this SG Junior features an uncovered Double Black Custombucker, which complements the all-black aesthetic and custom Ebony finish. The guitar was sent through the Murphy Lab and given the Heavy Aged treatment, which makes it look as if it went on tour all around the world. The idea of this design came from vintage guitars that were modified for humbuckers in the 1970s, refinished, and played every night for decades. Now available straight from Gibson Custom, this take on an alternative history of this model not only makes for a unique story but also a unique sound and aesthetic.
Not available on a normal production guitar, the 1963 SG Junior Reissue is reincarnated with customizations that are rare to see on this stripped-down model. This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG Junior Reissue features a humbucker pickup like those found in the bigger sibling, the 1964 SG Standard Reissue, which mixes the two models. Finished in a custom Ebony finish with Murphy Lab Heavy Aging, this guitar looks as if it has a book of stories to tell. Included with the guitar is a reissue hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
