Firebird Custom Figured Top in Cobra Burst
This Gibson Custom Select Firebird™ Custom features a flame maple top and a custom Cobra Burst finish. Gibson Custom Select offers guitars with unique features that are hand-selected by Gibson’s experts. These features can include exotic tonewoods, custom finishes, handpicked electronics, and special hardware specifications. Made in small batches by the skilled artisans at Gibson Custom, this collection of guitars features unique designs with rare features. This Firebird Custom with Figured Maple Top features two striking upgrades from the Firebird Custom, which include an AAA figured maple top and a custom Cobra Burst finish. These two upgrades suit the model’s normal aesthetics with its multi-ply binding and mother-of-pearl block inlays on the fretboard.
The Gibson Firebird was designed by automotive designer Ray Dietrich and was released in 1963. The biggest difference that made the Firebird unique from the rest of the lineup in 1963 was the body and neck construction. Instead of having a glued-in neck, the Firebird features neck-through-body construction. This technique is still used today for historic reissues, but the Firebird Custom has a similar construction to the rest of the solidbody electric guitars with its glued-in neck-to-body joint. This construction technique allows the guitar to have a figured maple top specially specified through Gibson Custom Select as well as Made to Measure.
The Gibson Custom Firebird Custom features a mahogany body with a solid maple top, multi-ply binding around the top, an ABR-1 bridge with a Stop Bar tailpiece, and a pair of humbucker™ pickups. Instead of an opaque finish over a plain maple top, this Gibson Custom Select Firebird Custom features an AAA figured maple top. To accommodate the unique size of the Firebird, the billet of flame maple is different in dimensions than what is normally sourced for models such as a Les Paul™. To showcase this piece of figured maple, the top was finished in Cobra Burst, which uses a base coat stain that helps accentuate the figuring in this beautiful piece of wood. Gold hardware is featured throughout the guitar, including on the pickup covers, bridge, tailpiece, tuning machines, strap buttons, and the screws that mount all the hardware to the guitar.
Since its release in 1963, the Firebird has seen different construction techniques and pickup configurations. This Gibson Custom Select Firebird Custom adds an aesthetic that is not normally seen on a Firebird. In combination with the multi-ply binding and mother-of-pearl block inlays, this Firebird Custom will not be mistaken for any regular production-run guitar. Included with this guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
