1963 Epiphone Casino E-230TD, Serial Number 99312

Shipped from Kalamazoo on January 22, 1963, this Epiphone™ Casino™ E-230TD is an exceptional example of our fully hollow Thinline, dual-pickup electric guitar made famous in the hands of many of the most iconic musicians of the British invasion. Finished in a now faded and well-worn Royal Tan, this Casino has all the playwear of a guitar that has spent its life making music.

This guitar shows moderate wear along the front and back edges of the headstock, light-to-moderate even lacquer checking, nicks and dings consistent with regular use, and heavy arm wear above the bass-side f-hole. This wear is indicative of a well-played but cared-for instrument. There is an old headstock repair that remains solid and stable; the rear of the headstock was oversprayed at the time, and blacklights only a slightly different hue from the surrounding lacquer. Perhaps the clearest indication of the thorough use this instrument received is the worn-away “volume” and “tone” text on all four control knobs.

The neck profile is a slim but full C carve measuring .78” at the first fret and .92” at the 12th. The guitar was professionally refretted with medium jumbo fretwire by the team at Gibson Repair & Restoration and fitted with a new bone nut. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is dark and rich with the strong grain lines so common for this wood. The original ABR-1 bridge (included in the case) had begun to sink, and an aged Gibson Custom ABR-1 with nylon saddles was installed.

The electronics remain original and untouched, featuring Centralab® potentiometers (1346241 visible date code), Sprague Black Beauty capacitors, and the original pair of Dogear P-90 pickups. These pickups read 8.92k in the neck position and 7.95k in the bridge. As is often the case, the neck pickup is slightly hotter, offering a warm, blooming tone while the bridge provides an articulate and focused delivery with plenty of bite.

Although this Casino would have left Kalamazoo with a Trapeze tailpiece, that was long ago swapped for a Bigsby® B6, period appropriate for the guitar and likely installed early in its life. The vibrato unit functions well and adds an additional layer of sonic coverage to an already tonally diverse instrument.

The original blue-and-gray Epiphone hardshell case, which has been reinforced with duct tape over the years, is included and remains intact and fully functional.

This instrument has received a professional setup and a thorough inspection from Gibson Certified Vintage and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, Letter of Appraisal, and new Limited Lifetime Warranty.
