Ebony Top Banner J-45
This Gibson Custom Select 1942 Banner J-45™ Reissue features a custom-finished Ebony top with Murphy Lab Light Aging and a custom white teardrop pickguard. Gibson Custom Select offers instruments with distinct specifications that are handpicked by Gibson’s experts using the same method as creating a Made to Measure guitar. These instruments offer a unique take on existing models with custom finishes, unique electronics, exotic tonewoods, distinct inlays, and more. Crafted in small batches by skilled artisans in Bozeman, Montana, Gibson Custom Select acoustic guitars offer special instruments made available directly from the source.
The Gibson J-45 first appeared in Gibson’s lineup in 1942, which featured the banner logo until the end of 1945. These guitars are commonly referred to as being from the “banner-era,” made during World War II when there were material and workforce constraints. These guitars did not originally feature a truss rod due to the lack of metal that was available during the conflict. To compensate for the lack of a truss rod, the neck was made larger to withstand string tension better. Gibson acoustic guitars from this era were made by the “Kalamazoo gals,” who took the places of the men in the factory. Most of the workforce were seamstresses, with excellent attention to detail, making these vintage guitars highly desirable.
The Gibson Custom 1942 Banner J-45 is a modern recreation of the famed “banner-era” J-45, made from 1942 to 1945, but with the added stability of a truss rod. This gives the player added adjustability for changing environments. The guitar features a thermally aged red spruce top, a 1942 Banner J-45 Historic neck profile, a Gibson script and banner logo silkscreened in gold on the peghead, and open-gear tuning machines. Under the top is red spruce X-bracing, fixed with hide glue to provide the top stability against string tension. The neck profile is modeled directly from vintage examples, which have a wider nut width than the typical J-45 Standard or other non-reissue instruments, measuring 1.77 inches rather than 1.73 inches.
The two customizations on this Gibson Custom Select Banner J-45 are an Ebony-finished top and a white teardrop pickguard, which give the guitar a sinister look. These customizations give this guitar a completely different attitude from the core offering, which features a Vintage Sunburst finish with a tortoiseshell teardrop pickguard. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a reissue-style hardshell case.
