Gibson Custom pays homage to Gustavo Cerati with landmark ES-335 tribute, available exclusively at the Gibson Garage Miami

This enhanced Gibson Custom ES-335 has been aged in the Murphy Lab and carefully recreates the original character of Cerati’s beloved 1965 ES-335, including its distinctive double pickguards

Gibson Custom has partnered with the estate of Gustavo Cerati to launch the Gibson Custom Gustavo Cerati ES-335™, a tribute to one of the most influential artists in Latin American music. Limited to just 60 guitars, the model will be available exclusively through the newly opened Gibson Garage™ Miami (in person and by phone) beginning Friday, September 18, 2026. Teased during opening week celebrations, this is the first major exclusive release tied to the new Garage, and one that cements Gibson as the first guitar maker to formally celebrate Cerati’s unmatched contribution to Latin music culture. 

Inspired by Cerati’s original 1965 ES-335, this elevated Gibson Custom ES-335 version has been aged by the Murphy Lab and features a 60s Cherry finish, factory double pickguards, Grover® kidney button tuning keys, and a B7 Bigsby®, diligently reflecting the guitar that became inseparable from Cerati’s artistic identity. 

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1959, Gustavo Adrián Cerati Clark rose to international prominence as the frontman, guitarist, and creative force behind Soda Stereo. Following the band’s initial breakup in 1997, Cerati embarked on a critically acclaimed solo career and became revered across his lifetime for his musical innovation.

Cerati purchased his original Gibson ES-335TD in the mid-1990s at Rudy’s Music in New York, where it had already been customized with a second pickguard, leather back pad, and Bigsby vibrato. Those distinctive details became part of the guitar’s visual identity and are, as a result, faithfully reflected in the Gibson Custom recreation. 

Cerati’s 1965 ES-335 was used for some of his most notable live performances, featuring prominently in Soda Stereo’s historic 1996 MTV Unplugged performance, the band’s 1997 El Último Concierto farewell tour, and the monumental Me Verás Volver reunion tour in 2007. The guitar also appeared on major international broadcasts, including his 2007 Live Earth performance alongside Shakira.
