A Special with unique and distinctive sonic flavors

The Les Paul™ Special has been a player favorite since it was first released in 1955 as an upgraded alternative to the Les Paul Junior. It was designed to bridge the gap between the Junior and the Les Paul Standard and did so by adding a second pickup and additional controls for it to the Junior platform, along with some cosmetic upgrades sourced from the Standard, including a bound fretboard. While the Les Paul Special has been released in various versions over the years, including models with single and double-cutaway bodies, the one thing that has remained relatively consistent on most Les Paul Specials is the classic P-90 pickups. Still, the P-90, as great as it is, is but one of the iconic pickups in the legendary Gibson pickup lineup. Now, Gibson is proud to introduce a new take on the classic Les Paul Special with the Les Paul Special with Mini Humbucker and P-90.

Available only directly from Gibson and at the Gibson Garage locations, the Les Paul Special with Mini Humbucker and P-90 is equipped with a Gibson mini humbucker in the neck position and a P-90 in the bridge. Being the same size as a P-90 and slightly smaller than regular humbuckers, the mini humbucker fits into the same sized pickup cavity as a P-90 and delivers low-noise humbucking pickup performance and a slightly brighter and more open tone than what is normally associated with standard Patent Applied For style humbucker pickups, resulting in a tone that combines some of the brightness that P-90s are known for and some of the warmth of humbuckers, all while remaining hum-free. The mini humbucker and P-90 are highly complementary pickups that work great together and bring an exciting new range of sonic flavors to the Les Paul Special.

The Les Paul Special with Mini Humbucker and P-90 is outfitted with all of the other features that you would normally expect to find on a Les Paul Special, including a solid mahogany body, a mahogany neck with a delightfully substantial 50s Vintage profile, and a bound rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and acrylic dot inlays. The individual volume and tone controls for each pickup are hand-wired with Orange Drop® capacitors. The wraparound bridge delivers outstanding sustain, and the tuning machines are classic Vintage Deluxe models with white buttons. Along with a low-friction Graph Tech nut, it all comes together to deliver solid tuning stability and an outstanding variety of tones that expand on the ones available from a regular Special but still remain squarely within the legendary Les Paul tonal family. A Gibson hardshell case is also included to keep this unique Special safe when you’re traveling to your next performance.
