Polaris White SG Junior with an Underwound Dogear P-90

This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG™ Junior Reissue features Murphy Lab Light Aging, a custom Polaris White finish, and a P-90 Underwound Dogear pickup. Gibson Custom Select offers unique instruments based on existing models with customized features, such as hand-selected electronics and unique finishes. While the 1963 SG Junior Reissue is not available through the standard Gibson core offering, the model is available through the Made to Measure program and Gibson Custom Select. Previously exclusive to the Gibson Garage Nashville, this guitar is handcrafted in small batches at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee.

The SG Junior follows the same ethos as the Les Paul™ Junior in the model hierarchy. While the SG Standard features neck binding, trapezoid inlays, an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic™ bridge, humbucker™ pickups, and an inlaid crown and headstock logo, the SG Junior takes a stripped-down approach. With simple dot inlays, no fretboard binding, and a silkscreen logo, the SG Junior is free from any aesthetic upgrades that do not affect the sound of the guitar. Where that changes is the body of the guitar, where a wraparound Lightning Bar bridge replaces the ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic. Replacing the pair of humbucker™ pickups is a single Dogear P-90 pickup that produces a unique sound when bolted directly to the body of the instrument. Wired to one volume and one tone control before hitting the output jack, the SG Junior is not only simple in its aesthetics but also in its electronics.

Not currently offered in the Gibson Custom Shop core line, the 1963 SG Junior has a close following with SG fanatics who crave the simple things in life. Custom finished in Polaris White, this special offering is given the Murphy Lab Light Aging treatment, which includes a coat of antique lacquer. The antique lacquer is the little-known hero in the aging process, dulling the guitar’s white color, giving it a slightly yellow hue, emulating the aging of the clear nitrocellulose lacquer of a vintage guitar. The other customized feature on this Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG Junior Reissue is an Underwound Dogear P-90 pickup, replacing the standard-issue Dogear P-90. During the 1950s and 1960s, P-90 pickups varied in output strength. The standard P-90 pickup across the models from Gibson Custom represents most of the P-90 pickups produced in Gibson’s Golden Era. This Underwound edition of the P-90 is similar to pickups with fewer windings, making it slightly weaker in output and giving the guitar a very different sonic character from standard P-90 pickups.

Inspired by vintage Polaris White-finished SG Juniors, this SG Junior is aged through the Murphy Lab and fitted with an Underwound Dogear P-90 pickup. These vintage touches make this SG Junior a perfect addition to any vintage aficionado’s collection who wants something extra special. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
