The Les Paul Junior, now with a humbucker
The Les Paul™ Junior has been a player favorite since it was first introduced in 1954. Initially designed as a student model, the Les Paul Junior has been embraced by countless professional musicians due to its ease of use, great sound, and exceptional playability. Over the years, many of these guitars have been modified by players. One of the more popular modifications is replacing the original single-coil Dogear P-90 pickup with a humbucker™ for better hum resistance. Now, Gibson is proud to offer a Les Paul Junior with exactly those specs, except this one comes straight from the craftory, without the sometimes questionable quality of third-party modifications.
The Les Paul Junior with Humbucker features a single-cutaway, slab mahogany body that delivers rich midrange and excellent sustain. It is paired with a mahogany neck with a fat, 50s Vintage profile that gives players a substantial yet comfortable playing feel perfect for everything from first-position chords to lead lines higher up the neck. The 22-fret rosewood fretboard has a 12” radius, making string bends smooth and fretting easy at every position. A Wraparound bridge anchors the strings, ensuring rock-solid intonation and sustain despite its no-frills aesthetic. The headstock is fitted with Gibson Deluxe tuners with white buttons, which, together with the low-friction Graph Tech® nut, ensure excellent tuning stability.
What makes this Les Paul Junior different from the norm is the pickup. Instead of the usual Dogear P-90 in the bridge position, the Les Paul Junior with Humbucker features an unpotted Custombucker humbucker with an Alnico 3 magnet. This still delivers great Gibson tone, but without the risk of hum interference at a gig or in the studio. With the Les Paul Junior’s master volume and tone controls, simplicity is the name of the game—plug in, dial up your tone, and unleash classic rock, blues, or punk riffs without any fuss, knowing that a broad range of tones can still be achieved by adjusting the position of your picking hand and the settings on those two controls.
True to its heritage, the Les Paul Junior with Humbucker’s minimalist design is a reminder that less really can be more. Its lightweight construction provides a comfortable playing experience, whether you’re jamming with friends at home or hitting the stage for a high-energy show. And while the original was designed with beginners in mind, the modern Les Paul Junior has captured the hearts of countless professionals seeking that signature grit and clarity.
Loaded with vintage charm, workhorse reliability, and a modded aesthetic without the DIY or third-party cost and hassle, the iconic Les Paul Junior with Humbucker puts authentic tone and effortless playability above all else, just as it has for nearly 70 years.
