Sinker Mahogany J-45 50s
This Gibson Custom Select J-45™ 50s Sinker Mahogany features performance-focused upgrades with the appearance of a vintage guitar. Gibson Custom Select features guitars with handpicked features such as special tonewoods, unique finishes, and other features not available on guitars from the standard Gibson lineup. These guitars are made in small batches by skilled artisans at Gibson Custom in both Bozeman, Montana, and Nashville, Tennessee. Key features on this J-45 50s are the use of sinker mahogany on the back and sides of the guitar, a red spruce top, an L.R. Baggs™ HiFi pickup system, and a thin VOS nitrocellulose finish.
The most prominent feature on this J-45 50s is the use of sinker mahogany, which is a highly regarded tonewood known for its vintage sound. Sinker mahogany comes from salvaged logs that were submerged underwater and recovered to use for guitar making. Sinker mahogany shows characteristics of old-growth mahogany that is much more similar in density and grain structure to the mahogany used in the 1930s to the 1950s. This translates into a sound similar to vintage guitars with wood that Gibson Custom can use today. To add to the performance upgrades, the Sitka spruce top has been replaced with a red spruce top; another upgrade used on vintage recreations of models from the 1940s. Hide glue construction is featured throughout the guitar, securing all of these coveted tonewoods and providing maximum resonance. A thin VOS nitrocellulose finish further improves the resonance and gives the guitar a vintage appearance.
Under the hood is an L.R. Baggs HiFi pickup system, which translates this upgraded guitar’s sound to a larger audience over a PA system. Instead of a transducer pickup mounted underneath the saddle, the L.R. Baggs HiFi system is mounted directly onto the bridge plate. These two transducers are non-invasive due to being lightweight as well as not interrupting the energy transferred between the strings and the top of the guitar. Two aesthetic features on this guitar are subtle: the headstock and the pickguard. A silkscreen gold script Gibson logo takes the place of the standard block logo on the headstock. In place of the large pickguard normally featured on the Gibson J-45 50s, a teardrop pickguard is used instead. This pickguard shape was used in the early 1950s, so it still fits with the theme of this guitar.
All these vintage-inspired features improve the guitar’s sound while retaining modern playability, with a Rounded neck profile and a typical nut width. The aesthetic upgrades on this J-45 50s also set this guitar apart from the rest of the crowd, clearly indicating this is not a normal J-45. Included with the guitar is a hardshell case and Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
