An artistic celebration of the iconic Hummingbird
The Gibson Hummingbird™ is one of the most iconic guitars ever built. Introduced in 1960, it was the first square-shoulder dreadnought acoustic model Gibson produced. Now, Gibson Custom is proud to introduce the Hummingbird Custom Koa, a top-of-the-line Hummingbird with exceptional beauty and tone. This rare model from Gibson Custom features hand-inlaid and hand-engraved hummingbirds on the headstock, fretboard, pickguard, and bridge. This handcrafted instrument is a true custom piece!
The Hummingbird Custom Koa features a back and sides of beautifully figured solid koa wood. Koa is prized not only for its exceptional beauty but also for its tonal properties, with some of mahogany’s warmth paired with maple’s brighter top end. The two-piece back features a center marquetry strip and is framed by multi-ply binding. The solid Sitka spruce top is reinforced with the traditional Gibson scalloped X-bracing and framed by multi-ply abalone binding. The combination of koa and Sitka spruce produces a bright but balanced sound that will continue to warm up and improve with each passing year, making this model a player’s dream.
The mahogany neck features a comfortable Rounded profile and attaches to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint using hot hide glue. The ebony fretboard is adorned with intricately engraved mother-of-pearl and abalone hummingbird and flower inlays and equipped with 20 standard frets.
The bound headstock is equipped with gold-plated Grover® tuning machines with engraved buttons. It also features a beautiful mother-of-pearl and abalone hummingbird inlay, along with a mother-of-pearl Gibson logo. The nut is bone.
The Hummingbird Custom Koa features a richly detailed pickguard with mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays, along with an abalone rosette. The traditional belly-up bridge is crafted from ebony and also features two mother-of-pearl hummingbird inlays with engraved detailing. The saddle and bridge pins are bone.
If you’re looking for an exceptionally well-appointed and decorated Hummingbird, this is a model you simply must try. You’ll be impressed by its beauty and impeccable craftsmanship, but its tone will seal the deal. It comes packed in a Gibson Custom hardshell case to ensure safe storage and transport.
