1968 Gibson Country Western, Serial Number 907111
Introduced in 1955 as a natural-finished alternative to the Southern Jumbo, the Country Western paired Gibson flat-top construction with split parallelogram fretboard inlays, multi-ply body binding, and a mother-of-pearl Crown peghead inlay. The model transitioned from its original slope-shouldered body to a square-shouldered design in 1963, with most examples produced post-1964 also adopting a narrower nut width. This 1968 example reflects both of these later-period changes in an exceptionally clean and well-preserved guitar.
Completed at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on February 21, 1968, this Country Western is exceptionally clean, with light, even lacquer checking and only a handful of small nicks and dings throughout. The mahogany back displays particularly striking figure, while the peghead edges and corners remain notably clean. The original soundhole label, Kluson® Deluxe tuners, nut, and frets are intact, with the original frets remaining in excellent condition.
The guitar has received a previous bridge reglue, and a small crack extending from the edge of the pickguard has been repaired and cleated. Its Medium C neck measures .80" at the first fret and .96" at the ninth, providing comfortable depth despite the narrower 1 9/16" nut width.
Acoustically, this Country Western is lively and resonant, with impressive volume, a rich low end, and an open, booming character. It is an easy-playing, responsive guitar with the kind of power and richness that makes a great Gibson flat-top so rewarding.
The guitar is accompanied by its original four-latch black and red chipboard case and a Lifton™ Historic hardshell case.
This instrument has received a professional setup and thorough inspection from Gibson Certified Vintage and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, Letter of Appraisal, new Limited Lifetime Warranty, and exclusive Gibson Certified Vintage accessories including a leather guitar strap, matching leather luggage tag, and vintage-style Gibson pick container.
