1960 Gibson Skylark Custom Deluxe EH-500, Serial Number 00770
This 1960 Gibson Skylark™ Custom Deluxe EH-500 is a wonderfully preserved and completely original piece of Gibson's late-1950s and early-1960s modernist era. Built from Korina just a few years after the original Flying V™ and Explorer™ put the wood at the center of some of our most radical designs, the little Skylark offers its own taste of that golden-era Korina history at a decidedly more approachable price. With its sculpted body, raised silver Gibson logo, and wonderfully simple layout, it is also just a very cool piece of mid-century Gibson design.
The Custom Deluxe variation features a simplified painted fingerboard with dot position markers and a felt slip pad adhered to the underside of the body. The original Natural finish has aged beautifully, with light checking and a handful of small nicks and dings from careful use. The nickel-plated hardware has developed an even patina throughout, while the raised silver plastic Gibson logo remains intact and in great shape. The original Kluson® Deluxe single-line, three-on-a-plate tuners retain their black buttons and function as they should.
Under the hood, there isn't much to complicate things. The original single-coil pickup measures 7.71k ohms, with one volume control, one tone control, and untouched original electronics. The Centralab® volume potentiometer carries a 1346005 date code from the 5th week of 1960, while the tone potentiometer is coded 1345950 from the 50th week of 1959. The original Sprague Bumblebee capacitor and Switchcraft® output jack also remain in place.
With a 22.5-inch scale and weighing right at 5.00 pounds, the Skylark is compact, simple, and a lot of fun to play. We have it outfitted with GHS® Custom Shop 15-36 Electric Lap Steel strings and tuned to C6, while the original pickup is clear and lively with plenty of character. Whether you're looking for a lap steel to put to work or simply want an original Korina Gibson from one of the most celebrated periods in our history, there is a lot to like here.
The original three-latch blonde hardshell case with red lining is also included. It shows moderate wear and tarnishing to the hardware but remains in good, functional condition. The right-side spring latch is missing, while the remaining hardware, handle, and original Gibson logo badge remain intact and functional.
This instrument has received a professional setup and thorough inspection from Gibson Certified Vintage and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, Letter of Appraisal, new Limited Lifetime Warranty, and exclusive Gibson Certified Vintage accessories including a leather luggage tag and vintage-style Gibson pick container.
