1954 Les Paul Custom Reissue in Moss Mist

This Gibson Custom Select 1954 Les Paul™ Custom Reissue features a brand-new Moss Mist finish. Crafted in small batches by the skilled artisans at Gibson Custom, Gibson Custom Select guitars feature customized features that are handpicked by Gibson’s experts. These features can include rare finishes, upgraded electronics, customized neck profiles, and special hardware specifications. These models are based on production models, but with customizations that make them different and unique from the rest of the pack. These guitars are designed using the same system as the Made to Measure program. This Gibson Custom Select 1954 Les Paul Custom Reissue features a customized finish that is brand new to Gibson Custom. The other customized feature on this guitar is nickel hardware in place of the standard gold hardware.

The Gibson Les Paul Custom debuted in 1953 with a few upgrades from the Les Paul Standard in both aesthetics and playability. While the Les Paul Standard in 1954 had a wraparound bridge, single-ply body and neck binding, and a pair of P-90 Soapbar pickups, the 1954 Les Paul Custom featured an ABR-1 bridge with a Stop Bar tailpiece, which allowed for more accurate intonation. Multi-ply binding is featured throughout the entire guitar, from the 5-ply binding on the top of the guitar’s body to the 5-ply binding around the headstock, which surrounds the iconic Custom split diamond inlay. More aesthetic upgrades include mother-of-pearl block inlays, gold hardware, and an Ebony paint job. This colorway later became known as the “Black Beauty.”

While many of these upgrades were purely aesthetic, the body construction, fretboard material, and pickup configuration also differed from the Les Paul Standard of the same period. The body is crafted from a single piece of mahogany, free from a maple cap that is found on the Les Paul Standard. Instead of a rosewood fretboard, the Les Paul Custom features an ebony fretboard in its place. Lastly, the electronics are the same as the Les Paul Standard, except with a Custom Staple pickup in the neck position. This pickup was rarely used on Gibson models, with the 1954 Les Paul Custom being the most popular.

The finishing department at Gibson Custom developed the Moss Mist finish on this guitar. This finish caught the eye of Gibson’s experts, who collectively decided that the finish would be used on a Les Paul Custom. The Les Paul Custom has been a popular platform to show off different colors throughout the years. From its inception, the model was famously finished in Ebony and has had many finishes since its debut, from Classic White to Wine Red. The standard gold hardware has been replaced with nickel hardware throughout the entire guitar. This subtle change makes the guitar slightly less flashy while still retaining its elegance.

This model is rarely customized due to its close relationship with tradition, but this fresh take on a classic model gives this guitar a unique aesthetic. This brand-new finish, in combination with the nickel hardware, is a classy recipe that is accentuated by the Les Paul Custom appointments. Included with the guitar is a hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
