Gibson Custom Select offers guitars with unique specifications such as custom finishes, unique tonewoods, special electronics, and more. Based on existing Gibson Custom models, these guitars feature handpicked specifications designed by Gibson experts with a keen eye for detail. Made in small batches by the skilled artisans at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, Gibson Custom Select instruments are for those who want something out of the ordinary. Previously exclusive to the Gibson Garage Nashville, this Explorer Custom features a custom Wine Red finish on the top with a Natural back and neck, a custom-specified fretboard, VOS nitrocellulose lacquer, and unique electronics.

The Gibson Explorer debuted in 1958 featuring an unbound Korina body and neck, a natural finish, a rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, and gold hardware. While the original recipe is still available in Gibson’s lineup, the Gibson Custom Explorer Custom mixes two of Gibson’s most iconic models: the Les Paul™ Custom and the Explorer. Features taken from the Les Paul Custom include multi-ply binding on the top of the body, a bound ebony fretboard with big block inlays crafted from mother of pearl, black Speed knobs, 490R and 498T pickups, and gold hardware. This modern interpretation of the Explorer customizes it without disturbing the fundamental design of the Korina Explorer.

Customizations on this Explorer Custom include a Wine Red Top with Natural back and neck, VOS nitrocellulose lacquer, a bound rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, and Custombucker pickups. While the Explorer Custom is usually dressed in all black, this Wine Red and Natural iteration brings new life to the model. From the front, the guitar features classic Gibson aesthetics that are rarely seen together, while the back looks similar to a typical Korina Explorer with its Natural finish. Another design cue from the 1958 Explorer is the rosewood fretboard with dot inlays. This fretboard on the standard Explorer Custom is usually ebony with big block inlays, but is substituted for a rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, nodding to the original design of the Explorer. A key difference here between the Korina Explorer and the Explorer Custom is the addition of binding on the fretboard on the Explorer Custom. Taking more vintage cues from the original Explorer design are the electronics. Under the hood lies a set of vintage-style Custombucker Alnico 3 pickups, but with a slight twist. The bridge position is outfitted with the typical Custombucker, but the neck position features a Custombucker Underwound Alnico 3 pickup.

Mixing classic Explorer stylings with the modern Explorer Custom platform is a recipe that pairs nicely together. This guitar looks right at home with its Wine Red and Natural finish, bound rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, and gold hardware. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
