The iconic Gibson square-shoulder dreadnought, with a song that’s familiar to millions.

When it first took flight at the dawn of the 1960s, the Gibson Hummingbird™ was our first-ever square-shoulder dreadnought. It soon became popular with The Rolling Stones, who used their Hummingbirds to write some of their biggest and most beloved songs. Indeed, there are few more iconic images in rock ’n’ roll than the Stones in their pomp, armed with impossible cool, Gibson acoustic guitars, and a hitmaking Midas touch. In the decades since, Gibson Hummingbirds have been used to glorious effect by a diverse and growing cast of music-industry luminaries, from Gillian Welch to Radiohead.

The Gibson difference.

Radiused tops and bracing

Radiused tops and bracing

It might be nominally referred to as a flat-top, but like our other acoustic guitars, the Gibson Hummingbird features a domed top and back. Unlike the carved top of an archtop or mandolin, this effect is created by subtly radiusing the bracing—typically with a 28’ radius on the top and a 12’ radius on the back—which the top and back conform to when glued. This tension is a key ingredient in the rich tone and expressive dynamic range of a Gibson Hummingbird.

Dovetail neck joint

At Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman, Montana, we pride ourselves on doing more work by hand than any other major manufacturer, on every guitar we build. The necks on our Hummingbird acoustics are still fitted by hand in the vintage style with a dovetail joint, which means the neck is glued into a recess in the body for maximum transfer of vibrations, light weight, structural strength, and optimal balance.

Square-shoulder sound

Square-shoulder sound

It may be named after one of nature’s tiniest and most delicate creatures but there’s nothing small about a Gibson Hummingbird’s sound. Those square shoulders introduce more bass into the equation than you’d find from our round-shoulder designs, giving the Hummingbird a bold, full-bodied voice with sweet trebles that couldn’t be better suited to strumming—pick one up, play a G chord, and instantly find out why these guitars are the choice of some of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Gibson Hummingbird Artists

Gibson Hummingbirds helped define the sound of 1960s pop music, and 70 years later, artists at the cutting edge of modern music won’t accept any substitute for the unbeatable combination of power and sweetness that this celebrated ’bird provides. It looks pretty damn good on stage, too.
