Alongside its heavily pimped relatives in this quintet of one-offs—the others being a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s, an Epiphone USA Coronet, a Gibson Custom Explorer™ Custom, and a Firebird™ Platypus 10-String—this fabulous Les Paul Junior Double Cut comes finished in an exclusive new color-shifting heavy flake sparkle accented with plenty of gold.

Most guitarists are familiar with the lore—the Les Paul Junior was introduced in the 1950s as a more affordable, stripped-down instrument designed for students, then as the decades rolled by, a host of players got hip to its minimalistic yet toneful charms, from classic-rock titans to punks and indie kids. Using the chassis of our popular Les Paul Junior Double Cut as a basis, the Mod Collection team replaced the standard Wraparound bridge arrangement with a black ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic™ and Flying V tailpiece with through-body stringing, all tastefully accented with gold screws, gold thumbwheels and bridge posts, and brass saddles.

The pickguard and truss rod cover? Well, they are also gold, and at the headstock you’ll find a V design that not only echoes the tailpiece but is also a subtle nod to the Roman numeral for five and thus the High Five Collection. The Grover® tuners are also black to match the bridge and tailpiece, and the guitar comes in a hardshell case to keep it safe on the road.

Is this the coolest High Five Collection guitar of all? It’s a tough call, and entirely subjective, but there’s no denying that this is the most eye-catching Junior to come out of our Nashville craftory in some time—and the feel and dynamic response of a Junior with a Flying V tailpiece introduces a flavor to your collection that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else. Breathtaking, inspiring stuff.

All Gibson instruments go through rigorous QC, but every once in a while, a guitar with outstanding playability and tone doesn’t quite meet the strict cosmetic standards at our craftories. This one is a USA-made Epiphone with some major design twists.

Celebrating five amazing years of the Gibson Mod™ Collection, this Epiphone USA model takes the classic stripped-down double-cutaway chassis of the Coronet and soups it up with a Bigsby® vibrato, Thunderbird bridge pickup and Firebird neck humbucker™. Yes, you read that correctly. And, like the other members of the High Five crew—a Gibson Les Paul™ Junior Double Cut, a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s, a Gibson Custom Explorer™ Custom, and a Firebird™ Platypus 10-String—the Coronet comes finished in an exclusive new color-shifting heavy flake sparkle guaranteed to turn heads.

The Mod Collection team gave us the following rationale for this eye-catching creation: “The Epiphone USA Coronet came about almost by accident. We just happened upon it in a rack of guitars and noticed it had not been routed for pickups. It was set aside because the neck angle was too high for a stock model. We knew we could make something fun, cool, and exciting out of a 24-fret Coronet by adding an ABR-1 bridge and a Bigsby. Additionally, we wanted to push the envelope by giving it a unique pickup combination. Hence, the Firebird humbucker and Thunderbird bass pickup combo.”

Shouldn’t a two-pickup Coronet with an ABR-1 bridge technically be an Epiphone Wilshire? Well, not quite. No matter how extreme the modifications are, or how far an instrument deviates from its original specifications, Mod Collection naming convention dictates that the original model name still applies. So this is still a Coronet—just a one-of-one example like no other that has come before.

Where classic Coronets offer the simplicity and raw power of a great double-cut Les Paul Junior, this guitar is something else entirely. In combination with the Bigsby tailpiece, the pickups deliver depth, attack, and complexity in abundance—ideal for the ambient soundscapers among you or players heading out on a future-surf safari. Just add throbbing tremolo and reverb for days. In addition, with two full octaves on deck thanks to this Coronet’s extended 24-fret configuration, there’s an enormous amount of range and sonic potential here. Excited? Curious about the name? The Firebird Platypus pays tribute to a rare transitional Gibson Firebird from 1965, which paired the classic Ray Dietrich-designed reverse Firebird body style with a flat, non-reverse headstock some people think resembles the bill of a famous Australian semiaquatic mammal. Maybe in a certain light. If you squint. Underwater.

How did the Mod Collection team convert it from a six to a 10-string design? In addition to the four extra tuning machines added to the six-and-four peghead, the nut and bridge were modified to accommodate four extra strings. Look closely, and you’ll see that the low E, A, D and G strings here are octave pairs. On a traditional 12-string electric guitar, the high E and B are typically paired with unison strings. Here, without those unison pairs, there’s less of the woozy chorus effect created by small fluctuations in pitch that characterizes the traditional 12-string sound, leaving more emphasis on the octaves and freeing up the high E and B for more traditional lead playing, solos, and string bending. It’s a cool hybrid approach that will surely prove to be a wellspring for musical inspiration—just stomp on a distortion pedal for some seriously massive octave riff tones.

In addition, a custom gold-plated pickguard replaces the stock three-ply white unit, and matching gold Top Hat knobs replace the regular black parts with their silver inserts. Powered by a set of vintage-style Firebird humbuckers™ with Alnico 5 magnets, this Firebird Platypus 10-String is a rare bird indeed, offering an array of sounds you won’t find anywhere else combined with a spectacular, head-turning appearance and a hardshell case to keep it safe and sound on the road. Alongside its siblings—an Epiphone USA Coronet, a Gibson Les Paul™ Junior Double Cut, a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s, and a Firebird™ Platypus 10-String—it comes dressed in an exclusive new color-shifting heavy flake sparkle finish. It has also been pimped heavily by the Mod Collection team with some cool pickup choices and hardware. Quite simply, everything about this attention-grabbing axe says “extra.”

Back in the late 1950s, the original Gibson Explorer confused and confounded men in horn-rim glasses, crisply pressed shirts, and neckties, but the arrival of longhairs, hulking amplifier stacks, and stompboxes a decade or so later helped create a landscape where the asymmetric six-string beast could prove itself as the undisputed king of the hard-rock jungle. Indeed, there’s never been a safer bet for heavy guitar tones than the unimpeachable combination of a huge slab of mahogany and a humbucking pickup. It also balances rather well when slung low on a strap and pounded in front of legions of adoring fans.

This Explorer Custom takes an already bold design and ups the ante somewhat by replacing the usual Stop Bar tailpiece with a Maestro™ Vibrola™ and opting for a Soapbar P-90 in the neck position with a gold cover to match the gold hardware elsewhere. Other custom details include a gold pickguard, truss rod cover, and knurled knobs with inset jewels. Shrinking violets need not apply.

In addition to the aesthetic glitz, the combination of that whammy bar and a P-90 neck pickup offers expressive shimmer and twang that you wouldn’t usually get from an Explorer—but flip the pickup selector to the bridge position, and we’ve got you covered when it’s time for powerchords. This visually stunning instrument comes safely housed in a hardshell case and was born ready to turn heads on stage and in music videos.
