Southern Jumbo with Red Spruce Top and HiFi Pickup
This Gibson Custom Select Southern Jumbo in Wide Vintage Sunburst features player-focused upgrades while retaining vintage aesthetics. Featuring a red spruce top, hide glue construction, red spruce bracing, and a HiFi electronics system, the customizations on this Southern Jumbo directly impact the sound of the instrument. Gibson Custom Select is a collection of instruments that feature handpicked details like unique finishes, custom electronics, and rare tonewoods. These guitars are based on existing models with customizations handpicked by Gibson’s experts and are made in small batches by the skilled artisans in Bozeman, Montana.
The Gibson Southern Jumbo shares the same foundation as the J-45™, but with more ornate details. Additional layers of binding are added around the top and back of the body, while the neck receives binding and split parallelogram inlays instead of simple dot inlays. Finishing with the headstock, a block Gibson logo and crown are inlaid with mother of pearl. The rest of the guitar retains the same winning formula that has made the Gibson J-45 one of the most recorded guitars in the history of music. Dating back to the 1940s, the model has evolved over the decades, but the ethos has always remained the same. The sum of all these parts feeds into an instrument that is ripe to fit into a singer-songwriter mix. From intimate venues to packed arenas, the Southern Jumbo is an icon in the industry.
This Gibson Custom Select Southern Jumbo brings player-focused upgrades that have a direct impact on the sound of the guitar while incorporating modern, top-of-the-line electronics so that sound translates to the stage and studio. Typically found on premium models such as the Gibson Custom 1942 Banner J-45, red spruce is prominently featured on the top and the X-bracing. All these high-quality tonewoods are married to each other using hide glue, which is another feature typically found on a 1942 Banner J-45. Using hot hide glue to construct the guitar is not only a historic tradition at Gibson, but the organic glue also gives the instrument a more vibrant resonance. Utilizing an L.R. Baggs™ HiFi pickup system, this guitar produces a natural tone through an amplifier or PA system. This HiFi pickup system is non-invasive to the acoustic tone of the guitar, even with it being mounted directly to the bridge plate. This lightweight pickup system retains the natural sound of the guitar while reproducing the iconic sound that made Gibson flat-tops so famous. The custom Wide Vintage Sunburst finish is modeled after vintage Gibson J-45 and Southern Jumbo examples from the mid-1950s, with the finish edges extending closer to the guitar’s edges. This extra layer of customization makes this Gibson Custom Select offering unique, but still Gibson-centric.
With performance-focused upgrades for both the stage and the studio, this Gibson Custom Select Southern Jumbo showcases the level of customization that is possible while making the guitar look slightly modified from the original version. These features touch nearly every point of the guitar while retaining the ethos of the Southern Jumbo Original with an upgraded red spruce top and X-bracing, hide glue construction, and HiFi pickup system. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
