Epiphone’s first solid body electric guitar goes back to its roots
Epiphone’s first solid body electric guitar was the Crestwood, a symmetrical double-cutaway model introduced in 1958, not long after Gibson purchased Epiphone. In 1959, the Crestwood was slightly modified with rounded body edges and a new pickguard and renamed the Crestwood Custom. Further changes to the model occurred by 1963, when Epiphone added a new batwing six-in-line headstock design and a somewhat reshaped body with an extended upper horn. While some players prefer the later versions with their slimmer neck profiles, many others prefer the earlier Crestwood Customs for their beefier Medium C-shaped neck profiles.
Now, the Crestwood Custom returns to its roots with a newly updated version. The latest Crestwood Custom features the rounded-edge, symmetrical double-cutaway body shape of late 50s/early 60s models, crafted from two pieces of solid mahogany for a rich, resonant, midrange-focused tone.
The glued-in mahogany neck features the Medium C neck profile that fills the hand without being overly large. For a more premium playing feel, this updated Crestwood Custom features a rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and vintage-style oval pearloid inlays.
The three-on-a-side, reduced-size Kalamazoo-style headstock features Epiphone Deluxe tuners with ivory buttons. Along with a GraphTech® nut, they ensure stable, reliable tuning. In another historical nod to the earlier Crestwood Custom models, the headstock also features the vintage-style Epiphone Bikini badge.
The other ends of the strings pass over a Tune-O-Matic™ bridge that delivers full action height and intonation adjustability, so you can set things up exactly how you like them. Additionally, it is equipped with TUSQ® saddles for reduced string breakage and improved tuning stability, even when using the Tremotone vibrato, which provides additional expressive pitch modulation capabilities. The smooth-functioning Tremotone features a stylish rosewood insert with a foil Epiphone E emblem. You’ll also find another foil E on the vintage-style clear butterfly pickguard, which has a white stripe in the middle that highlights the foil E.
That white stripe also draws the eye to the heart of the Crestwood Custom—a pair of Epiphone PRO™ Mini Humbucker pickups. These are wired to individual volume and tone controls for each pickup that use CTS® potentiometers, and a three-way pickup selector for a broad range of tonal options—from clean chime to raging distortion—with the twist of a knob—and the right amp or pedal settings, of course.
