The Special sonic magic of mini humbuckers

Players have loved the Les Paul™ Special since it was first introduced in 1955 as an upgraded alternative to the Les Paul Junior. It was designed to bridge the gap between the Junior and the Les Paul Standard and did so by adding a second pickup and additional controls for it to the Junior platform, along with some cosmetic enhancements sourced from the Standard, including a bound fretboard.

While the Les Paul Special has gone through various changes over the years, including bodies with single and double cutaways, the one thing that has remained relatively constant on most Les Paul Specials is the classic P-90 pickups. Still, the P-90, as great as it is, is but one of the iconic pickups in the legendary Gibson pickup arsenal. Now, Gibson is proud to introduce a new take on the classic Les Paul Special with the Les Paul Special with Mini Humbuckers. Available only directly from Gibson and at the Gibson Garage locations, the Les Paul Special with Mini Humbuckers is equipped with a pair of Gibson’s acclaimed mini humbucker™ pickups. Sized the same as a P-90 and slightly smaller than regular humbuckers, they fit into the same sized pickup cavity as a P-90 and deliver low-noise humbucking pickup performance and a slightly brighter and more open tone than what is normally associated with standard Patent Applied For style humbucker pickups, resulting in a tone that combines some of the brightness that P-90s are known for and some of the warmth of humbuckers, all while remaining hum-free.

The Les Paul Special with Mini Humbuckers is outfitted with all of the other features that you would expect to find on a Les Paul Special, including a slab mahogany body, a mahogany neck with a satisfyingly hand-filling, 50s Vintage profile, and a bound rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and acrylic dot inlays. The individual volume and tone controls for each pickup are hand-wired with Orange Drop® capacitors. The wraparound bridge delivers excellent sustain, and the tuning machines are classic Vintage Deluxe models with white buttons. Along with a low-friction Graph Tech nut, it all comes together to deliver solid tuning stability and great tones that are a little different than a regular Special but remain squarely within the legendary Les Paul tonal family. A Gibson hardshell case is also included to keep this unique Special safe when you’re on your way to your next gig.
