This Gibson Custom Select Dove™ Original is fully customized from beak to tail. These customizations include the finish, tonewoods, electronics, inlays, and some other fine details. This unique Dove Original is made possible through the Gibson Custom Select and Made to Measure programs. While the Purple Stain finish is completely new from Gibson Custom, every other customization is possible through these very special programs. Gibson Custom Select instruments are designed by Gibson’s experts with an eye for detail that makes these instruments unique from the core offering from the standard production line.

The Gibson Dove has been in Gibson’s lineup since 1962 and has been played by players from Tom Petty to Elvis Presley. While the Hummingbird™ and the Dove are winged siblings in the Gibson family, they share the same body shape, but that’s where the similarities begin to end. The Dove receives an increased scale length, maple back and sides, and special bridge and pickguard designs. While the Dove is most closely related to the Hummingbird in its appearance, many features of the Dove are more in line with the SJ-200. The increased scale length and maple back and sides are both features famously found on the SJ-200. These two defining characteristics affect the sound of the guitar, while the scale length affects string tension and its sonic characteristics. The Dove has a uniquely shaped bridge and is upgraded with shell inlays on the wings. Shell inlays also appear on the pickguard, with a Dove mother of pearl inlay as well as hand-painted leaves and flowers stamped into the pickguard.

This Gibson Custom Select Dove Original features a Purple Stain finish, a bearclaw spruce top, AAA flame maple back and sides, an ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl big block inlays, and single-ply binding around the peghead. These features are vibrant departures from the muted aesthetics of the Dove Original found in the core offering. The Purple Stain finish emphasizes the figuring on both the bearclaw spruce top and the AAA flame maple back and sides. An ebony fretboard with big block inlays is borrowed from the Les Paul™ Custom and fits the flamboyant aesthetic of this design. To match the ornate fretboard inlays, single-ply binding was included on the headstock to finish off the look of the guitar. Outfitted with a Baggs™ HiFi pickup system under the hood, this Dove is ready to fly wherever the wind takes it.

The design behind this Dove takes inspiration from the mysterious artist who led a musical revolution in the mid-1980s, where funk and rock were met with pop melodies. With all these extremely unique features, this Purple Dove is an instrument that needs to be seen to be believed. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
