The Les Paul Custom guitars made from 1954 to 1960 used a single piece of mahogany for the entire body, while the Les Paul Standard models from the same era used a mahogany body with a maple cap. In 1961, the single-cutaway Les Paul model family transitioned to the SG™ body shape. When the original single-cutaway design was reintroduced in 1968, the Les Paul Custom featured the mahogany body and maple cap construction from the 1950s Les Paul Standard models.
