A Hummingbird from an Alternative Universe

This Gibson Custom Select Hummingbird™ Rosewood features hand-selected details that give this guitar a unique voice that is rare to find from Gibson. Part of the Gibson Custom Select Collection, this guitar features handpicked details chosen by Gibson’s experts. These acoustic guitars are made in small batches by skilled artisans in Bozeman, Montana. Customized details on these guitars could include exotic tonewoods, custom finishes, upgraded electronics, and special inlays. These guitars are based on existing models with customized features that give each design a uniqueness that sets it apart from everyday offerings.

The Gibson Hummingbird has remained in Gibson’s lineup since its introduction in 1960. While the model has evolved over the years, the formula has remained the same. This formula is a square-shoulder dreadnought with a spruce top, mahogany back and sides, a short scale length, split parallelogram inlays, and the iconic Hummingbird pickguard. Over time, the Hummingbird model has been outfitted with different tonewoods and finishes, such as swapping the mahogany back and sides for rosewood or walnut. The model has been used by rock and roll songwriters and folk musicians since its introduction in 1960 and remains as relevant as ever.

The details that make this Hummingbird different from other iterations of the model include herringbone purfling around the top of the instrument, a long scale length, rosewood back and sides, and an ebony fretboard and bridge. While the herringbone trim does not have an impact on the sound of the guitar, the purfling certainly has an impact on the aesthetic of the instrument. This material resembles the bones of a fish, which is how the material got its name, and has been used by guitar makers since the 1930s. While herringbone is uncommon on a Gibson acoustic guitar, it traditionally indicates a high level of craftsmanship that the instrument has received.  A long, 25.5-inch scale length replaces the traditional 24.75-inch scale length. This longer scale length produces more string tension, which causes the string to not only feel tighter under the fingertips but also produces a stronger attack when striking the string. To finish off this classic recipe, an ebony fretboard and bridge are paired with rosewood back and sides. This combination of specifications gives this guitar a unique voice that is not normally found in Gibson guitars. An L.R. Baggs™ HiFi pickup system is fitted to this guitar, which accurately reproduces the natural sound of this guitar through a PA system.

This evolution of the famous Hummingbird model brings the voice of Gibson to a new landscape in the acoustic guitar space. With traditional guitar designs mixed with Gibson’s heart and soul, this Gibson Custom Select Hummingbird Rosewood Herringbone brings together two different methodologies of guitar design. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
