These customizations are made possible through Gibson Custom Select and Made to Measure, which are custom designs based on existing models. Customizations can include unique electronics, handpicked tonewoods, and small details that add up to a unique instrument. These instruments are designed by Gibson’s experts and are handcrafted by the skilled artisans in Bozeman, Montana. Some highlights of this guitar include a bearclaw spruce top, AA quilt maple back and sides, a striped ebony fretboard and bridge, a custom Cherry Sunburst Stain finish, an inlaid script logo on the headstock, and no fretboard inlays.
The Gibson J-45 Standard is the modern representation of the famous round-shoulder flat-top acoustic guitar. Featuring traditional X-bracing with a SlimTaper™ neck profile, the J-45 Standard plays like a modern guitar with the sound and spirit that has made the model so famous since the 1940s. A 24.75-inch scale length is the standard for the majority of Gibson guitars, and this guitar features it. This scale length is ideal for both fingerstyle and strumming, which is another reason this guitar has been popular for decades.
What sets this J-45 Standard apart from the normal offering is the figured tonewoods, a custom finish, special inlay specifications, and extra binding around the neck and headstock. The top is made from bearclaw spruce, a naturally figured variety that is rare to find in any milled spruce billet or log. The back and sides feature AA quilt maple, another rare figured tonewood that is extremely difficult to find in the appropriate dimensions for the back and sides material of a J-45. These figured tonewoods are finished in a Cherry Sunburst Stain, which puts them on special display. The staining process enhances the grain of both the bearclaw spruce and AA quilt maple. After the wood is stained, the outer edge is sprayed in a Sunburst pattern to give the guitar the signature Gibson aesthetic. The bound striped ebony fretboard is free from inlays, which balances nicely with the intense figuring of the spruce and maple. The headstock features a set of gold Grover® Rotomatic® open-back tuning machines, an inlaid script Gibson logo, and binding around the perimeter.
This unique set of features makes for a special J-45 Standard with figured tonewoods throughout the entire instrument. This guitar is the first to feature this Cherry Sunburst Stain finish, which showcases the figured woods in the best way possible. Pair this with no fretboard inlays on a bound striped ebony fretboard with an inlaid script Gibson logo on a bound headstock, and it makes for a classy yet flashy guitar. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
