SG Custom with Figured Maple Heartwood Top
This Gibson Custom Select SG™ Custom features a maple heartwood top, a rare variation on figured maple. Gibson Custom sources the best figured and unique tonewoods that are available worldwide. Exceptional figured tonewoods like this maple heartwood are perfect for Gibson Custom Select, which are made in small batches at the Gibson Custom Shop. These guitars feature handpicked components that make these instruments special, such as hand-mixed finishes, unique hardware specifications, and customized electronics. This Gibson Custom Select SG Custom features a special Light Charcoal and Translucent Ebony finish that puts the figured maple heartwood top on full display.
The SG Custom has its roots in 1961, when the SG body was introduced. While the model was still known as the Les Paul™ Custom at the time, the shape had changed to what is now known as the SG. Features from the Les Paul Custom carried over to the SG Custom, including the aesthetic upgrades such as the binding, hardware, and inlays. Adorned on the headstock is multi-ply binding around the perimeter with the iconic Custom split-diamond inlaid in mother-of-pearl. A bound ebony fretboard with block mother-of-pearl inlays and gold hardware completes the look of the guitar. Because of the design of the SG’s beveled body edges, the body does not feature binding like a Les Paul. This transition is stark on the top, where the figured maple heartwood is glued to the mahogany body.
This Gibson Custom Select SG Custom features a figured maple heartwood top, a tonewood that is very rare on any guitar. Maple heartwood comes from the core of the tree and is darker in nature compared to the sapwood that is commonly used on Gibson guitars that utilize maple. Not only is maple heartwood visually different from maple sapwood, but it is also denser, making the wood heavier and contributing to a unique sound compared to the more common sapwood. To highlight the beauty of this tonewood, the top is finished in Light Charcoal, offering a striking contrast to the back and neck, which are finished in Translucent Ebony. To finish off the look, gold hardware is featured throughout the guitar, including the pickup covers, tuning machines, and every screw used—from the control panels to the truss rod cover.
