1963 SG Junior Reissue in TV Inverness Green

This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG™ Junior Reissue comes in a custom TV Inverness Green finish and has been given the Murphy Lab Light Aged treatment. Gibson Custom Select makes guitars like this possible through customizations on existing models. These customizations can include hardware specifications, custom pickup configurations, hand-mixed finishes, and custom inlay work. Normally finished in Vintage Cherry, the 1963 SG Junior Reissue is a simple yet versatile rock machine that serves as a perfect platform for customization. The most apparent customized feature on this Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG Junior is the TV Inverness Green finish, the first of its kind from Gibson Custom. This finish uses the same process as TV Yellow but with a different layer of transparent finish applied. Finally, this guitar is sent through the Murphy Lab and receives the Light Aged treatment, which simulates minor play wear over the years, as well as some weather checking.

The Gibson SG Junior first appeared in the Gibson catalog in 1961 with the introduction of the SG body shape. The SG Junior replaced the Les Paul™ Junior after the transition from the single cutaway Les Paul shape to the SG shape between 1960 and 1961. The ethos of the model has remained the same, originally being made for student-level players who didn’t need all the bells and whistles that a professional-level player would need. Just a few years after its release, the Junior platform was adopted by rock stars such as Mike Campbell[PO1] , proving that these simple guitars were capable of much more than they were made to do. While the SG Junior has a single Dogear P-90 pickup, a volume and tone control, and a wraparound bridge, the guitar is simple in design, which is all that some players need.

This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG Junior Reissue features a TV Inverness Green finish and is the first model from Gibson Custom to feature the finish. TV Inverness Green combines the process of TV Yellow, one of Gibson’s most iconic finishes, with Inverness Green, a custom color finish from the early 1960s. TV Yellow is only possible on mahogany, which is why it was one of the optional finishes on the Les Paul Junior during the 1950s. While it’s not exactly clear why TV Yellow was given its name, the finish has been a fan favorite since its inception. Inverness Green, which was first used as an automotive paint by General Motors in the 1960s, was considered a “custom color” that appeared on models such as the Firebird™ V. Combining a finish exclusive to a student-level model with a custom-ordered metallic finish custom-ordered by dealers makes for an intriguing story.

The introduction of TV Inverness Green on a 1963 SG Junior Reissue showcases that the possibilities are endless from Gibson Custom Select and Made to Measure. This special finish combines two of Gibson’s most famous finishes on one guitar, which makes for a unique instrument. Included with the guitar is a hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
