1959 ES-355 finished in British Racing Green
This Gibson Custom Select 1959 ES-355™ Reissue features a custom British Racing Green gloss finish. Gibson Custom Select offers unique specifications on existing models that set these guitars apart from standard offerings. With a keen eye for detail, these guitars are designed by Gibson’s experts using the same system that is used for Made to Measure, a program that allows for fully customized guitars. Gibson Custom Select instruments are made in small batches by the skilled artisans at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, using the highest quality tonewoods and electronics. Previously exclusive to the Gibson Garage Nashville, this ES-355 combines one of the most famous colors in motorsports with one of the classiest instruments in the Gibson catalog.
The Gibson ES-355 first appeared in the Gibson lineup in 1959 as an upgraded version of the ES-335. The relationship between the ES-335 and the ES-355 is similar to that between the Les Paul™ Standard and the Les Paul Custom. The single-ply binding on the top and back is upgraded to seven-ply binding on the top and five-ply binding on the back of the body. Gold hardware replaces the nickel hardware found on the ES-335, including on the pickup covers, bridge, tailpiece, tuners, toggle switch screw, strap buttons, and every screw that is used on the guitar, from the pickguard mount to the screws on the truss rod cover. A bound ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl big block inlays replaces the bound rosewood fretboard with dot inlays. The split-diamond headstock inlay borrowed from the Les Paul Custom is featured prominently on the headstock, which finishes off the aesthetic upgrades.
With a rich history in race cars and sports cars, British Racing Green is an iconic color worldwide. The color first came into play during the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup, where the color, then-named Shamrock Green, was used on British racing cars. The shade of green quickly became the United Kingdom’s representative color in motorsports competition. British sports car companies began adopting the color with production models like Steve McQueen’s famous 1956 Jaguar XKSS D-Type. While it’s most common to see an ES-355 finished in Sixties Cherry or Classic White, this Gibson Custom Select model shifts into another gear with a British Racing Green top. The gloss nitrocellulose lacquer showcases the depth of this finish with its metallic flake.
The 1959 ES-355 features the iconic Authentic 1959 neck profile, which is based on real-world vintage examples that have passed through the Gibson Custom Shop. This Authentic 1959 neck profile has a Medium C shape, while being slimmer than the 1950s Chunky D neck profile and thicker than the Authentic 1960 neck profile. Loaded with Custombucker Alnico 3 pickups, this guitar has the voice of a vintage guitar without the hefty price tag associated with vintage Gibson humbucker™ pickups produced in the 1950s.
Combining one of the most iconic racing colors with the Gibson ES-355 is a match made in heaven, especially with its gold hardware and white binding. This contrast in colors makes this classy instrument worthy of the famed color. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a hardshell case.
