AAA Quilt 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue
This Gibson Custom Select 1959 Les Paul™ Standard Reissue features a custom Minnesota Burst finish over an AAA quilted maple top. Gibson Custom Select makes guitars like this possible using the same system that is used to design Made to Measure guitars. These instruments have handpicked features from Gibson’s experts that can include a special finish, exotic tonewoods, custom inlays, and more. Handmade in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Gibson Custom Shop, these guitars are made in small batches, so they’re rare to find out in the wild. Based on existing models in Gibson’s catalog, these guitars can be historic nods to Gibson’s past or completely off-the-wall designs that will surely get a conversation started.
The Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue is the flagship model from Gibson Custom, which is based on the holy grail of electric guitars. In Gibson’s history, 1959 was the year that it all came together for the Les Paul Standard. Desirable features included a figured maple top with a Cherry Sunburst finish, glued to a solid, one-piece mahogany body loaded with early humbucker™ pickups, which are desirable on their own. The neck profile had been refined from a chunky D-shape to a medium C profile, making the 1959 Les Paul Standard such a desirable instrument. The finish faded with exposure to ultraviolet light, making each guitar a unique shade of Cherry Sunburst and giving each its own persona. All these features combined in one guitar make for a legendary instrument that has been loved and desirable for decades. The Gibson Custom Shop uses laser-scanning technology to recreate these legendary guitars at a fraction of the price of an original.
Modifications to this Gibson Custom Select 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue include an AAA quilted maple top, a custom Minnesota Burst finish, and gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. The standard AAA flame maple top on the core model is upgraded to an AAA quilted maple top, which is much rarer than a piece of flame maple of the right size to use as a Les Paul maple cap. The custom Minnesota Burst finish is based on a vintage example that was originally sold at a guitar shop in St. Cloud, Minnesota, which is what gives the original guitar its name. The original Minnesota Burst had retained quite a bit of the red hue in the Cherry Sunburst finish due to little ultraviolet light exposure. Paired with a highly figured maple top, the original example is one of the most textbook Les Paul Standards produced in 1959. To achieve this finish at the Gibson Custom Shop, two coats of Antique lacquer are applied to the guitar after it receives its sunburst finish. This Antique lacquer gives the finish impressive depth of color and imparts a yellow hue to the mother of pearl on the fretboard and headstock logo. A gloss nitrocellulose lacquer is applied lastly to give this impressive AAA quilt maple top with the Minnesota Burst finish a factory-fresh appeal.
The lore of the 1959 Les Paul Standard runs deep, with this guitar offering nods to the past while showcasing the quality of AAA quilt maple that is available at the Gibson Custom Shop. Included with the guitar is a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity and a reissue hardshell case.
