MEET THE MASTER

LEO SCALA, THE MASTER ARTISAN

Leo started out studying chemical engineering and playing classical music on the clarinet in Belgrade, Serbia, a world he describes as full of relics, elements, and patinas. But by the mid-90s, his passions led him to rock and roll, electric guitars, and a new home in Southern California. In a small workshop there, for the last 25 years, he’s been obsessively crafting extraordinary guitars that are collected and played by discerning artists such as Richard Fortus of Guns N’ Roses, Phil X of Bon Jovi, Doug Aldrich of Whitesnake, and Warren Cuccurullo.

LEO SCALA, THE MASTER ARTISAN

Leo started out studying chemical engineering and playing classical music on the clarinet in Belgrade, Serbia, a world he describes as full of relics, elements, and patinas. THE BEST-SOUNDING VINTAGE GIBSONS NEVER MADE

What if the Les Paul had retained its original trapeze tailpiece well into the Burst era, but it didn’t get in your way when you played it and was designed to be removable, if desired, leaving a compensated wraparound tailpiece? What if the flamed maple beneath a Burst was stained pink before the burst was applied? What if the Les Paul Special Double Cut had stayed in the lineup beyond its relatively short original run and evolved into a double cutaway Burst-style model with some subtle ES-335 influences? Leo Scala imagines these details and brings them to life through his amazing artisanship in his latest Master Artisan release. Every detail of these guitars is obsessively conceived, customized, and handmade.
