If you like the look of dreadnought acoustic guitars—the classic shape first introduced in 1916—you’ll love a square shoulder guitar.

Square shoulder guitars are similar in shape to their well-known slope shoulder counterparts, but with a few notable differences. The upper bout of a square shoulder guitar may not form sharp corners, but it creates the illusion of a boxy, angled top. The waist is slightly wider than that of a round-shoulder guitar, as is the lower bout.

These changes in shape naturally bring changes in sound. Compared to a round-shoulder instrument, a square-shoulder acoustic guitar has a more defined sound, with crisp highs and present mids. At the same time, the lows are slightly more pronounced due to the instrument’s wider lower bout.

You’ll hear these sonic qualities in every Gibson Hummingbird™, recognized as one of the all-time great acoustic guitars. The Hummingbird’s punchy, direct sound makes it a fan favorite as a solo instrument and an ensemble guitar. Play it with the band, perform with it at a quaint café, or strum it casually at home—it’ll always fit the bill.

The Dove™ is the other famous square-body guitar from Gibson. It also features beautiful imagery of a mother-of-pearl bird on the pickguard, as well as an ornate bridge that’s somewhat reminiscent of a Jumbo’s opulence. But make no mistake—the Dove is an acoustic guitar with its own sound and personality. Expect a rich, resonant tone that shines in any setting.

However, the Hummingbird and the Dove aren’t the only square-shoulder dreadnought guitars you’ll find here. The Country Western is another well-known vintage Gibson square shoulder model, or more of a modern, updated take on a classic, explore options like the Songwriter or the G-Writer, with their unadorned—though equally unique—pickguards.

Wherever your preferences lie, you’ll find a musical companion in a Gibson guitar. Our square-shoulder guitars blend cutting-edge research with long-standing tradition, and they’re sure to make you want to play every minute of every day.
