Baldwin part of Shanghai youth piano competition

Forty international students from 19 countries competed for the top prize of $20,000 in the 2nd Shanghai International Piano Competition in Shanghai, China, October 31-November 12 in the Shanghai Grand Theater. Gibson China was one of four sponsors of the event along with Bank of China, General Motors and Yamaha. Contestants in the master class, which took place Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9, played a Baldwin SD10 Concert Grand and a Wurlitzer HC-162D Grand piano, some for the first time.

The jury for the exciting event was made up of internationally known piano professors from France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Spain, the United States, Russia, Korea and China. Yang Liqing, director of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, was elected chairman of the judge committee.

The purpose of the biannual event is to raise the artistic level of young pianists in China and overseas. The first competition first took place in December of 2001 and Ukranian Grynyuk Alexe won the championship.

More than 800 piano students and professors from across China came to watch and participate in the competition. Many Chinese residents have come to enjoy playing or listening to the piano, and there are 100,000 piano students in Shanghai alone.

The Hamilton Vertical piano line and Wurlitzer WP-153 Grand were displayed in the entrance hall of the Shanghai Grand Theater for visitors to play. A formal piano concert capped off the master class November 9.
