Dylan triumphant at Newport festival with Gibson
J-45
Bob Dylan returned to
Newport
Folk Festival last weekend and fans had nothing but applause as
he walked onstage around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, slung a Gibson
Montana J-45 acoustic over his shoulder and, with former Vice President
Al Gore standing just offstage, led his four-piece backing band into
an acoustic version of "Roving Gambler." The legendary singer-songwriter
last played Newport in July 1965, when he famously "plugged in" for
the first time, smashing barriers between folk and rock, and was booed
by some folk-music purists.
Gibson Montana acoustics, the "official guitar" of the 2002 Festival, was there with it's Traveling Exhibit and hosted an artist hospitality room where Gibson staff welcomed Dylan guitarists Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton and folk hero Arlo Guthrie as well as numerous performers throughout the weekend.
