Gibson introduces Gibson Labs; to debut MaGIC protocol at AES

Gibson Musical Instruments, known for over 100 years as a leader in superior, handcrafted guitars and other fretted instruments, announces their newest division--Gibson Labs. Based in two offices in California - one in Silicon Valley's Sunnyvale, the other in a technology center in Redondo Beach, Gibson Labs is developing new technology solutions for the core Gibson brand, as well as forward-thinking products for the music and media industries, to be developed and marketed under new brands.

"The advanced technologies we are prepared to unveil from Gibson Labs are truly amazing," said Gibson Chairman and CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz. "We've brought some of the best and brightest people from the technology sector together to develop innovative concepts and applications in the quality tradition that Gibson is known for."

See MaGIC here. Gibson Labs will unveil and demonstrate the revolutionary MaGIC digital protocol at the Audio Engineering Society (AES) convention Friday, November 30 to Monday, December 3, 2001, at the Javitz Center in New York City. Additionally, new and innovative professional audio products are slated for introduction from Gibson Labs in 2002.

The guiding principle of this research was to apply the digital technology invented for computer network products to audio equipment, and develop an interconnect that would be:

  • Long, locally repairable, trivial to install, and simple to use.
  • Capable of supporting multiple audio/video channels of advanced fidelity audio and high quality video.
  • Fit for enabling installations to scale beyond the capacity of existing multiple cable solutions and meet the requirements of permanent installations such as live venues, recording studios, home automation and more.
  • Able to provide power for digital instruments thereby removing the need for batteries.
  • Supportive of intuitive control interfaces.
  • Successful in providing extreme simplicity and reliability.

The above stated goals were to be accomplished by augmenting, not diminishing the acoustic, electric, or physical characteristics of musical instruments or other media sources. MaGIC is the result of these efforts..
