Bonds and Gibson hit one out

Barry Bonds launched himself into the record book last night by smacking his 70th home run of the season tying St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire's 3-year-old home run record.

"Barry, Barry, Barry!" the fans at Houston's Enron Field had chanted as he came to bat, and they instantly began the chant again, accompanying him around the bases with a lusty "Barry, Barry, Barry!"

Bonds arrived jubilantly at home plate to find his Giants teammates, San Francisco Manager Dusty Baker and the coaches waiting for him. They mobbed him and exchanged embraces. After Bonds ducked into the dugout, the fans continued their chant and wouldn't stop until he re-emerged to acknowledge their salute.

Bonds will try to hit No. 71 and pass McGwire as the reigning single season home run king in the final three games on the Giants' regular-season schedule against Los Angeles at San Francisco this weekend.

Gibson Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz recently visited Bonds and manager Dusty Baker at the Giant's Pacific Bell Park to present him an official San Francisco Giants Gibson USA Les Paul. The customized Les Paul Junior features an image of Bonds as well as Giant heroes Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal.

Gibson made only five Giants guitars that were presented to the team. They will be used by the Giants to raise funds for its diverse community outreach programs.

Last June, Chicago Cubs Vice President of Marketing, John McDonough was presented a Chicago Cubs Gibson Les Paul by Mr. Juszkiewicz on behalf of the Cubs Care Charity Network.
