Gibson stars shine at Summer NAMM 2001

Enough people and musical equipment to fill a Nashville convention center and arena descended on Nashville this past weekend for NAMM Summer Session 2001, the bi-annual, industry trade show. Gibson brought John Lennon, Pete Towshend, Les Paul, Tony Iommi, Andy Summers, Dickey Betts, Angus Young and Steve Howe downtown to celebrate.

Gibson guitars played a crucial role in the music of these legendary players, and the new models will ensure the closest possible relationship between guitarist and guitar in the future, said Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp. That is nothing but good news for guitar players.

Here's the highlights from Gibson's NAMM celebration. Read about the new product and check out the photo galleries. You might see someone you know or yourself hanging at NAMM.

Progressive guitar hero Steve Howe put his name on a ES-175 to form a virtuoso trio of stellar, signature guitars by three of the most influential and inspirational guitarists in the history of rock music.

Several of Gibsons Classic models are got new looks with four new finishes for the ES-335 and a new Blues-inspired finish for the ES-135.

Gibson USA welcomed back the Les Paul Classic Premium Plus, with its highly figured AAA maple top.

Gibson Custom, Art & Historic

The new Gibson Custom Authentic guitars play hard, sweet magic. They recreate look feel and sound of a well-played original with vintage Gibson necks, the righteous sound of Burstbucker pickups, the timeless reaction of a hard maple top with a mahogany body and the look of an aged lacquer finish. Real guitars for real players.

To re-create the effect of time and use, Gibson Custom, Art & Historic offers three of its key vintage Reissue models in "working vintage" condition--the 1956 Les Paul Goldtop, the 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue and the 1968 Les Paul Custom. Each is made to look, feel and sound like its been played for years.

"These are some of the ultimate guitars on the planet," says Rick Gembar, general manager of Gibson's Custom Shop.

While researching and creating the Custom Authentics, Gibson Custom was able to inspect, play and hear the Gibsons of several notable guitar players including Dickey Betts and Andy Summers. That process inspired the first two Artist Authentic models-- the Dickey Betts Ultra Aged 1957 Goldtop and the Andy Summers 1960 ES-335.

Original Acoustic Instruments

Gibsons Original Acoustic Instruments (OAI) has introduced an innovative and practical scratch-resistant finish on its classic metalbody DOBRO resonator guitar model DM33. The new powder coat vein finish is offered in two colors - silver and bronze - on the DM33 Dobro, a roundneck model with a brassbody.

With the new finishes, the DM33 still retains its impressive playability and sound quality with the added benefit of being more resistant to scratching and road wear.
