MaGIC wins PAR Excellence award
MaGIC, the new digital transfer protocol from Gibson Labs, was picked by the editors of Pro Audio Review for its PAR Excellence Award. The awards were given to new, promising hot buttons at the annual Audio Engineering Society (AES) show, held November 30-December 3 in New York City.
MaGIC, like all the winners, was selected based on its promise, said PAR publisher John Gatski. It can be something of significant value that functions in pro audio, or it can be innovative, which is how we looked at MaGIC.
Its the hot button of the new promising technologies from the AES show.
Previous winners of the PAR Excellence awards include such well known pro audio products as the Sony DMX-100 digital studio mixing board, the Manley Vox Box tube processor and JBLs HLA series of high-end contracting speakers.
This is beyond cutting-edge technology - its bleeding-edge, said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp., who spearheaded the development of MaGIC at Gibson Labs, the American guitar maker's research division. "We have put software on top of Ethernet that basically synchronizes those packets to a master clock and allows it to send many, many channels and have many work stations that work together in synchrony, meaning low latency, meaning music," Juszkiewicz explained at the AES show. "By hitching our wagon to Ethernet it's not one point in time... it's a moving target, and it's going to drag us and the musician community into uncharted realms," Juszkiewicz said, adding that for now the focus remains music.
MaGIC is Gibson Labs new connectivity protocol that makes standard CAT-5 ethernet cable perform like a super cable, capable of carrying more information faster and farther than any existing system. Applications for MaGIC - short for Media-accelerated Global Information Carrier - range from a universal connector for home audio networks to digital sound at concert performances.
