Gibson CEO to host 'fifth Beatle' at Harvard multimedia event

GIbson Guitar Corp. is sponsoring An Evening with Sir George Martin: The Making of Sgt. Pepper tonight, October 12, at Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Gibson Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz will introduce Sir George and host the benefit event. The multimedia presentation, Martin's appearance, and a full gala weekend benefit Revels, Inc., which promotes the understanding and appreciation of traditional folk music, dance, and rituals from around the world. This event also celebrates Revels' thirtieth anniversary and honors its founding artistic director, John Langstaff.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, considered by many to be the most influential recording of the century, was a brilliant technical and creative feat. As producer, Martin, sometimes referred to as the fifth Beatle, contributed greatly to its success. His behind-the-scenes stories will enthrall Beatles fans. His multi-media presentation includes music and film of the Beatles and video appearances by Paul, George, Ringo and pop star Phil Collins, and Sir George's personal anecdotes and rememberances about the Beatles and the 1960's.

The Epiphone Company, a division of Gibson Guitar Corp., produces two John Lennon Casino guitars-- the John Lennon "1965" Casino, a faithful reproduction of John's beloved Vintage Sunburst Casino he purchased it in 1966, and the John Lennon "Revolution" Casino. Lennon decided to "strip" the finish of his '65 Casino. This is a faithful reproduction of his Casino with a "stripped" natural finish as it was then and as it remains today. Go here to download a presentation that features these guitars. You even get detailed specs and the history of the guitars.

Gibson with the Museum of Fine Arts is also donating for auction a Gibson Chet Atkins Tennessean.

While he is understandably best-known for his monumental work with the Beatles--and rightly celebrated for that canon of work, Sir George Martin retires this year from producing after a 48-year career in which he made over 700 recordings. These encompass every conceivable genre from pop, rock, jazz, country, folk, blues, metal, avant-garde, classical, baroque, movie soundtracks and stage cast recordings to comedy.

Like the most famous of his artists, the Beatles , he has enjoyed the exceptionally rare accolade of receiving both critical and commercial success. His productions have registered a staggering 30 Number One singles and 16 Number One albums in his homeland - and an equally astonishing 22 Number One singles and 19 Number One albums in the USA. These figures are duplicated in practically every country in the world. No other producer in history has a track record even remotely as successful.

Celebrations of cultures using traditional materials and seasonal rituals is a common theme in Revels performances. The Christmas Revels, the company's best known production, is a celebration of the winter solstice whose theme in any given year might range from Medieval, to Victorian, to Russian and American.

Many different productions occur annually in eleven cities across the country: Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Hanover, New Hampshire; Oakland, California; Media, Pennsylvania; Houston, Texas; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota; Tacoma, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; and Portland, Oregon. In addition, many smaller Revels-inspired productions are performed in various small towns throughout the nation.
