Cyber Riffs . . .Goin' down the Blue Highway; Gettin' lost in the Blue Net |
|
It's looking like a blue weekend. You can't run; you can't hide. The best thing to do is get deep inside the blues until you come out the other side. Crank up the music and take a virtual trip down TheBlueHighway until you get to the BluesNet.
Go slow on award-winning Blue Highway--Developed and maintained by Curtis Hewiston, The Blue Highway won the The Blues Foundation's 1998 Keeping the Blues Alive award for blues on the internet. No wonder. Mr. Hewiston's and his colleagues' love for the blues seeps through the monitor. In his opening dedication Hewiston writes, "We owe the blues to those who bore the pain of enslavement behind the frightful shadows of our collective soul. The Blue Highway, then, is dedicated to the men and women who traveled beyond our ignorant place, and to those who could not." The site is divided into seven primary links:
It's history. It's passion. It's the blues. Fun, too.
What is BluesNet?--BluesNet is a repository for information on blues performers. It is maintained by Rob Hutten (rob@hub.org). The artist summaries found on this site were volunteered by a fan of the performer and some of the information is heavily opinion-laden. This is deliberate - BLuesNet wanted to create a service in which readers could find information not available in the number of excellent blues history and reference books available. Most interesting is the mentors list. The net is full of experts on every subject under the sun. Amongst these experts are people who are especially knowledgeable about certain blues artists or categories. BluesNet includes a section on `mentors' - people who are willing to answer your every question about their area of blues expertise. Got a question about Blind Willie Johnson? Need a good jug band recommendation? Feel free to ask the person listed here. Email addresses are provided for all mentors. These guys are serious.
