Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz presented the award to Chet at a luncheon at Nashville's Planet Hollywood, hosted by country TV personalities Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase and benefiting the Nordoff Robbins Foundation for Music Therapy.

Despite the Planet Hollywood leather jacket given to him by the restaurant (in exchange for a Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman guitar), Chet remained fixated on Planet Hollywood's wall of stars, which is graced by the likenesses of dozens of movie, television and music personalities. "My wife was just asking me why I'm not up there," joked the winner of 14 Grammy Awards, a bevy of recent awards and accolades, not to mention festivals and scholarships that bear his name, "I don't see why they're up there, none of these people are as old as I am,"

Clint Black, John Fogerty, Steve Wariner and Suzy Bogguss also took the podium to personally thank Chet for the example he continually sets, both as a musician and as an individual.

"He talks to you like a regular person," Black stated simply, adding that Chet is always happy to teach one of his signature guitar licks to others.

Bogguss added that Chet would spend more time on teaching her if her playing weren't so "hopeless." Instead, she says, Chet tutors her on her equally hopeless golf swing.

In addition to presenting the first Chet Atkins Award, Gibson's Henry Juszkiewicz announced two music scholarships in Chet's name, created in collaboration with Paul McCartney. The $2500 Scholarships are to the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, a school that McCartney supports.
