Hangin' out at Gibson today: Down-under bluesman, repair guru and hot country guitarslingers |
|
Gibson's favorite Australian blues man, Geoff Achison, dropped by Gibson's Custom*Art*Historic division today, while guitar repair expert Dan Erlewine brought two of Nashville's finest pickers, Leon Rhodes and Sonny Thomas, in to the warranty repair department. Achison took a tour of the Custom*Art*Historic facility while having his Nighthawk set up. He's playing a series of selected U.S. dates as a solo acoustic artist, including a show tonight in Nashville at the Gibson Cafe and Guitar Gallery (formerly Henry's Great Coffeehouse). He'll then embark on a tour of England. Also on tonight's bill is Austin's Karen Tyler, who performs at 8:30. Dan Erlewine, author of books and articles on guitar repair, has been in town all week sharing trade secrets with Gibson's warranty repair staff. Today he brought along Leon Rhodes and Sonny Thomas, veteran house musicians with the Grand Ole Opry. The subject of the day is Rhodes' well-worn '64 Epiphone Sheraton (made by Gibson in Kalamazoo), which was in need of new frets. For reference, Rhodes brought his mid-'60s natural-finish Sheraton, which is outfitted with the widest, lowest frets we've ever seen. The challenge of replacing the frets will be nothing compared to the challenge of finding the proper fretwire. Erlewine's week-long visit to Gibson is indicative of our warranty repair department's commitment to stay on the cutting edge of guitar restoration techniques, thereby better serving Gibson's customers. Dan "The Guitar Repair Answer Man" Erlewine's repair clinic is produced in conjunction with Stewart MacDonald's Guitar Shop Supply. For a free catalog, call 1-800-848-2273 or visit www.stewmac.com.
