Jerry Douglas puts signature on signature model Dobro for Martell charity

Dobro Legend Jerry Douglas popped by BMI's Nashville office yesterday to autograph a Jerry Douglas signature model Dobro, donated by Gibson Musical Instruments to the T.J. Martell Foundation.

"I want to hear Jerry play this bad boy," said David Preston, Associate Director of Writer/Publisher Relations for the performance rights association, upon receiving the instrument.

While Douglas respectfully declined the impromptu performance, the "bad boy" Dobro is to be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the T.J. Martell Foundation's Frances Williams Preston Laboratories. (David Preston is the son of BMI CEO Frances Williams Preston.) The laboratories, located at Nashville's Vanderbilt University's Cancer Center, specialize in research aimed at curing breast cancer. The focus of the research is Gene Therapy, Cancer Genetics and Cancer Prevention.

The auction is part of the third annual Country in the Rockies Celebrity Ski Weekend, January 29 through February 2 in Crested Butte, Colorado.

John Berry, Mindy McCready, Kathy Mattea, Blackhawk and many other of country music's brightest stars will appear at the event. Purchase of a lift ticket not only benefits a good cause, but buys an activity-packed weekend and luxury appointments.

Recent statistics show that one out of nine women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer. An average of five women die every hour from the disease, (44,000/year). The efforts of the T.J. Martell foundation and the Frances Williams Preston Laboratories will hopefully reduce these numbers.
