On Monday (9/16), The King of the Blues reaches the tender age of 71.B.B. celebrated his birthday a week early this year, with an incendiary performance Friday (9/8) at Nashville's Riverfront Park. The festivities were sponsored by B.B.'s friends at Epiphone, who had their own reason to celebrate -- a new Epi version of B.B.'s famous Lucille guitar, expected to arrive at Epi dealers early next year.
Last year Gibson and the city of Memphis teamed up for a B.B.B.B. (B.B. Birthday Blowout), but this year, it will be business as usual for B.B. on his birthday, as he will be on his way to a gig in Knoxville.
While B.B.'s birthday will be low key, the rest of the year will be anything but. He is set to record a studio album this fall, which is much anticipated by both the blues community and the mass public.
Also keep an eye out for his upcoming autobiography Blues All Around Me, co-written by David Ritz and published by Avon.
With new guitars, albums and books coming up, fans of B.B. King will be getting the royal treatment in late 1996 and early 1997.
